  • HI;

    Thanks, Ted. Interesting you found that review – it was one of the first I read.

    It was info like that from B&H that started me on my quest. I worked on this for a week before posting here in desperation.

    That is why I am hoping that there is at least one XF100 owner who runs Vegas.

    The guy at Canon support is going to install a trial of Vegas 10e and get back to me, but I promised I would continue to research. Not just sitting on my hands!

    It is nice that Vegas has no problem with individual .mxf files.

    Thanks, anyone else out there?

    Hi;

    You are in for a bit of a struggle. I can’t get them to work, although I know “in theory” what is needed. I have not tried that hard.

    First, you have to have codec installed that understands the format of the video. FFDshow has a bunch and is pretty good, but I don’t use it. I’ve grown spoiled by VLC which has some magical way of displaying video even when there are no codecs of the needed type installed on the system.

    BUT – even after you get the codec working (one way to tell is that Windows Media Player will play the video) you still might need to tweak the registry.

    Here is a link to one of many, many discussions about this on the ‘net:

    Good luck! If you get it to work let us know.

    If Vegas Pro 11 is anything like Vegas Pro 9 and 10, you don’t need to uninstall it. I run both 9 and 10 without difficulty. Just make sure that you create a new copy of the older projects before you open then in the newer version.

    Hope this helps. I’m about to go for the upgrade, just want to stay current even though I’ll probably continue to run 10 for quite a while.

    Hi Al;

    I was a bit confused. I meant to say .mxf.

    I’m just about ready to buy a Canon XF100. Very nervous because I have been a Sony cam customer all my life. I have a brand-new NX70 that is driving me NUTS! I have it boxed and will send it back tomorrow.

    I was able to download some of the raw camera .mxf files from a dropbox and they work great in Vegas.

    I do have a question, I hope you have an XF100 and use the Canon EF utility. When I use Sony PMB to import camera files from my various Sony camcorders, PMB can take the multiple < 2 GB nnnnnn.MTS files from the camera that comprise a recording , and, (by also reading some kind of metadata?) combine them into a single file with a name in format yyyymmddhhmmss.m2ts on the computer. This is essential, because a big 50 GB recording consisting of 25 2GB raw clips would be insanely hard to work with!

    So, does the Canon EF utility have similar functionality, or will I be forced to deal with dozens of raw AAnnnn.mxf files?

    Thanks,

    Steve

    Hi Brad;

    When you decide to upgrade, consider dual-boot. That is what I did two years ago. Bought another SATA drive, a new copy of Windows 7 Pro, and did the install. The install fully understands dual-boot, configured the partitions and boot menu. Piece of cake.

    I don’t boot much into XP these days, but it is nice to have when needed. And, if either OS crashes, you have the other, on a separate disk, for the emergency.

    Your experience with Sony Vegas support mirrors mine. They really are clueless. I get much better “support” from the Sony Creative forums, and/or here on the Cow.

    It takes Sony weeks to answer a free support ticket, and the response is either wrong, or a lame request for more information.

    Clearly, Sony Creative does not give a rodent’s behind about post-sale support. But, if you all the “buy” line, they answer right away.

  • HI;

    I’ve never used Cineform .avi, so I probably don’t know exactly what you are talking about. However, when I need to save a portion of an AVCHD project to an intermediate file, I always HuffYUV. Lossless, seems to work great, no crashes. Produces .avi files that are about 1/3 the size of uncompressed .avi. They can be easily consumed by VirtualDub for various effects (mostly frame decimation for my time lapse projects)

  • Will be sending the NX70 back tomorrow.

    Was really hoping some NX70 owners would help me with this thread …

    Oh, well.

    thanks Brad.

    Sadly, my NX70 is driving me crazy – so many problems compared to my CX550V. More than just the zoom!

    It is boxed and I will probably send it back. I’m bitterly disappointed. Here are two vids that show some of the problems:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeaS1N-zuGM

    and

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cEHhvpfhos

    I really wanted to love this camera. In bright light it is sort of OK – but the WB and autofocus still have problems even in perfect conditions. Lots of little annoyances, like no on-screen display of the length of the current recording, the horrible menu system compared to the CX550V, the need to remove the hood for night shot, and so many others. The beautiful 1080 60p just can’t make up for the other problems.

    Now I’m looking at the Canon XF100, but I hate the thought of jumping ship from Sony. All my video cams, and most of my still cams, have been Sony. I’m horribly conflicted.

    Just last night I thought “let me try one more time”, I went into my daughters room and shot some video of her playing cello. Sounded great, looked good in the viewfinder. Put it on the computer and it was unusable – auto-focus terrible hunting. It was the kind of shoot that could not have been done in manual focus, because I walked around her, changed the distance, etc. the 550V would have captured it perfectly.

    I use HuffYUV and VirtualDub all the time. I hear Lagarith AVI is good, worth a try.
