    Hi guys –

I have been getting good info here for a while but have just created an account, because serious issues need to be addressed by Sony.

I built a Windows 7 PC to top specs and got Vegas Pro 10e because I had been using Platinum. Vegas Pro 10 has been a nightmare, but I’m so far into production on a 28 minute project that I can’t go back.

Crashed persistently on sub-clips, so I stopped using them. Crashed when saving and opening projects. Clips would randomly go black in the time-line or during render seconds would black out. Just crazy. (No it’s not a background CPU issue)

Emails to Sony were offered only canned answers. Tried those, with no improvements. Not single update was offered after e.

When I noticed that Vegas 11 was released I dropped the $200 for the upgrade believing naively that it would be an improvement. How could it be any worse? Installed 11 64 bit build out. Still crashed a lot on my project, but the big difference was that it is now impossibly slow it is impossible to use. I have switched back to 10.

I have had nothing but trouble with Vegas. Yes; it is easy to use when it works, but there’s nothing “pro” about the effects, transitions or support from Sony. I have never been so exhausted and disappointed by a software product in my life. I know someone who swears by it but he’s using 9 or older.

My brother warned me, he’s a Mac/Final Cut user and he can produced 2hr whole film project with the same specs I have on my PC.

I’m not a mac guy, so I’ll have to find an alternative software. PLEASE GOOD PEOPLE OF THE PLANET EARTH, HEAR ME AND HEED MY WARNING, STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM VEGAS 10 AND 11 AS YOU CAN UNTIL THESE ISSUES ARE ADDRESSED. (I apologize openly here to Sony engineers for the single word outbursts I wrote in the crash window these passed two months, but the alternative was suicide.)

For me, Vegas 10e pro has been the best Vegas produced ever!!!!!

Did you ever think that your ploblems might have something to do with your footage or your Windows 7 PC with top specs? Or even with your settings? Or with your …etc

Mid level software like Vegas tends to have a sweet spot that once you find it problems become less intrusive to your work. Unfortunately for some (like you) it might not ever get there and you will move on. The reason some of us continue down the path to find that spot is that the “pro” editing software suites that have become industry standard were written by people who’s last priority was a clean interface. I started using Vegas before it was even a video editor because of the clean and efficient audio workflow and I continue to use Vegas for video editing now. That same interface efficiency is why people cling to hope that Sony will finally make it STABLE.
The problem is that Sony is outside the current political ring of the NLE “industry.” I know that seems strange considering how big Sony actually is but third party development is more about politics than manpower and third party development is a big boost to the success of a product. Vegas is the ugly stepchild because (this is only my own personal conclusion) that if Sony actually did it right they would have the economic and industry power to squeeze out the competition so others are quick to call Vegas a toy. Unfortunately for us Sony is accepting Vegas as the ugly stepchild and not fixing it’s problems. Their great interface designers are not backed up by equal system level programming greatness.

    Theo,

Yes. I’ve considered those things. My system outperforms the required minimums to run Sony Vegas 11 and 10e.

I’ve researched the problems I’ve run into and I’ve found that there are plenty of other people who have had the same problems. Perhaps I am doing something wrong in my project, like editing up-converted 422 HD from a 60D SLR, maybe I should switch to low quality standard interlaced low end Sony handy cam video.

Oh wait. That would be dumb.

I agree Matt. Vegas is intuitive and looks good. Functionally though, no software should require so much messaging to work correctly.

As I mentioned in my post, I am doing a project that would be less complicated and use less memory than a feature length film and I’m stuck with Vegas because I can’t recreate months of work.

I’ve tried to find the sweet spot. I’m still trying, but I’m at a loss.

Putting Vegas aside for a moment, what are the specs of your new computer… CPU level,MB, chipset, RAM etc. ?

So, your computer was already crashing while running Vegas 10, and you somehow expected a new version of Vegas would fix your computer?

    Yes Steve that’s what I was thinking…

Actually, Since Sony Vegas 10 had not been updated in many many months and I was at my whits end and ready to give up, I made a desperate move in the hopes that this was THE latest update.

Different look same great experience. Switched back.

I am open to the idea that the problem is on my end, but I haven’t heard anything to indicate that is the case. If it was a simple hardware fix it would be done already.

I’d be happy to recant my angry assassination of the character of SVP if the solution can be found here. Believe me I want it to work. I still need it and I need it to perform well. My project is that important to me.

    Here’s the info –

    Windows 7
    Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU, 870 @ 2.93 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM installed mem. 64-Bit OS
    1.5 TB 7200 RPM SATA-3G 1st Hard Drive
ATI Radeon HD 6450 1GB Vibe
    I use a 2TB external for storage.

Seriously, I hope it is my computer because I’ll fix it today.

Are you editing on the internal or external hard drive?

  • Rob Artigo

    November 6, 2011 at 2:21 am

I am using the external drive for my editing files. I started out editing from the hard drive, but it was slow and lagged in virtually every aspect of normal editing. When I switched to the external drive the speed improved so that it was perfect. The crashing, blacked out clips, and other problems that existed before the switch however continued.

One note – I seemed to have a slight improvement when I updated drivers at the chip makers website. But that seemed to be short lived.

Once I had my whole project 28 minutes – 10 GB at the most in a single project I could no longer open it. It would crash on opening.

That was when I switched to 11. Which opened the file, but was so slow it was impossible to use. Then it started crashing.
