I complete agree – Apple should absolutely have built OMF into FCPX from day one and not left it to third parties. Automatic Duck did a pretty decent rush job but it’s a long way off being reliable (and now it’s a thing of the past anyway) and X27 is great but getting an OMF out with it requires adding an extra process which is always going to cause problems.
FCPX without rock-solid built-in OMF/AAF support is simply not a plausible option for projects requiring audio post, however good the onboard tools are. It’s Apple’s responsibility to make this work – and no-one else’s.

Try this new version of my Text Matte Effect which does what you need – you can also animate the offset of the text now.
The issue is you were having is to do with how the margins are set-up in the template. They need be be very wide to be able to get really big text.

It appears that layered TIFFs imported into FCPX get flattened (no layers come through) just as with PSDs – unless I’m missing something.

You could always try using one of the many free third party effects that offer this functionality, like this one that I made a while back:
There are lots of extra control options there which should answer your needs.

Do you still have any large stills in the project (besides the ones you’ve already taken care of)? These can cause major headaches.
Also if you’ve got some complex compound clip action going on that could also be a reason.
Or any one of another hundred reasons, you’re just unlucky 🙁
