Yes, indeed I’m on Firefox – but it used to work fine.

Many thanks for looking into it.

Are your cutaways always the same length?

Well, yes this is exactly what I am trying to convey. The most common client editing scenario is to have an edited piece with the length pretty much locked down and what they want to do is try alternative shots – the length of the new shot being determined by what’s already on the timeline. Hence my plea – which will obviously go unheeded because nobody else seems to ever fact this scenario – that we could at least have an option where auditions didn’t change length.

I do understand FCPX (and editing generally) to understand how to cope, however, but thanks all the same for the step-by-step instructions!

I’d strongly suggest not using send to compressor in this case – it’s very slow and generally not a desirable workflow.

FCPX can be very slow to render but it’s very much quicker – impressively quick, in fact – if you simply use the Share menu to Export a movie using the current settings. You can then take that file into compressor and do whatever you need.

I’m afraid you are going to have to live with the “large” file size – but really 3GB is absolutely tiny in today’s terms and storage is ridiculously cheap.

However, I don’t see “democritization” as the the same as “lowering standards.”

I don’t disagree at all with your opinion of this kind of “tutorial” but I do rather feel it is a necessary consequence of the whole democratization thing, like it or not.

Anyone who can open a box (have you seen those jaw-dropping “unboxing” videos!?) or download a piece of software from the App Store is now an “expert” and there’s not a lot we can do about it – most of the people watching these tutorials don’t know the difference and it becomes a vicious circle of downwardly spiralling standards. That’s the internet for you.

I would just say that this guy’s piece is a lot less dreadful than many I’ve seen.

And the self-promotion that you deplore is very much a necessary part of the YouTube self-publishing revolution – the aim is not so much to keep delivering quality content as to keep folks coming back to your “channel”. Persuading people that you’ve got something worth saying is arguably more important in this field than actually having something important to say.

I completely agree, Herb, that there is a use for this and it is very powerful as a concept – although for me it shouldn’t be the default behaviour, it should be the fancy alternative.

I was trying to make the point that there should at least be an option to do it the other way (audition duration stays the same regardless of the duration of the source clip) which would at least conform to the conventional 3-point editing standard. The audition is already an edit duration (with its own in/out) so it should normally only require one edit point in the source clip.

When I first saw it demo-ed I though it was a great idea for “auditioning” multiple cutaways – clients are always wanting to try this shot instead of that shot and then changing their minds and this would have been a perfect tool to accommodate that if they’d only given us the option for the audition to keep its length.

As it is, it’s not worth the extra effort of setting a precise duration for each source clip to match the precise duration of the audition – at least in my view. It’s much easier to stack the options in the old-fashioned way, until such time as Apple get around to changing this.

If Auditions don’t work for you, fine. It’s just a suggestion. No one is right or wrong here, although you seem to think I’m wrong for some reason.

It’s not that I couldn’t get them to work, it’s just that like so much else in FCPX it seem to me there’s a reasonably good idea there that feels like it needs a lot more work done to get it really up to speed.

I’ll shut up now – as always I do find it very illuminating to hear your ideas for integrating this stuff into your workflows and though I seem to keep arguing with you believe me a lot of what you are saying is being absorbed and processed. And wouldn’t it be dull if we agreed all the time?

Channel swap is one of the things I’d really like to have back in Motion 5 – along with the Chroma Keyer.

We did lose quite a lot with the new version – along with all the good stuff we gained. I’m sure it will find it’s way back eventually.

But it would also be nice to think that Apple could manage to take Motion “to the next level” as in many ways it’s a really brilliant tool that can often be very much quicker to get results from than AE.

And of course Auditions at the moment have only one edit mode – whatever you add to the audition will change the length of the audition. Even if this is thought to be desirable as a default behaviour which I frankly can’t see that it is, there should absolutely be an alternative mode that keeps the audition the same length – especially for the kind of tagging work that we’re talking about here. Very tiresome to have to pre-edit your new source clip to the right length to fit the audition.
