You have to use the Mask effect which has a feather control. You can’t do this directly to a trim – note that what we used to call a crop is now a trim. A crop is a crop plus a resize in order to help you make your footage fit the frame.

Who knows, maybe in a year from now you might get it back. Don’t despair just yet!

I have the same problem and this is huge. You can apply a mask and feather a clip, but if you then crop it to allow for a soft blend between the connected clip and the clip on the main storyline, you LOSE THE FEATHER. This really sucks. The feather does not change to the new cropped clip but IT SHOULD.

To fix this problem Apple needs to add feather back to the crop tool like it did on every other version of FCP known to mankind.

You could always try using one of the many free third party effects that offer this functionality, like this one that I made a while back:

    3009_tkyadjustableframev4.zip

There are lots of extra control options there which should answer your needs.

Es posible hacerlo con un filtro llamado “crop & feather” de la carpeta “distortion” del panel “effects”, que viene por default en FCPX.

Can be done with the filter “crop & feather” on folder “distortion” in panel “effects”, which comes by default in FCPX.

that link does not work any longer and I’m also looking for a crop and feather effect that will allow me to ajust the left/right/up/down crop while maintaining a feathered edge…

[bud kuenzli] “that link does not work any longer and I’m also looking for a crop and feather effect that will allow me to ajust the left/right/up/down crop while maintaining a feathered edge…”

You can use the Crop and Feather effect now in FCP X, or you could try out this effect which has onscreen controls for adjusting the left/right and top/bottom crop, offset controls and the ability to apply horizontal and vertical feather independently of each other:

    5395_tkyadjustablecropinstaller.app.zip

Double click the archive to unzip it and then double click the installer to install.

    Hope that’s useful.

Hey, sorry for digging up an old post, just wondering if a good solution ever came up for this. I really miss the way feathering used to be, finding it hard now. Any suggestions I find in forums or videos say use mask but my 10.2.1 doesn’t have that mask. Is it named something new now?
