To view it on an external monitor, you need a capture card capable of the resolution you are using for your animation. Best bet would be to buy a capture card and render your footage to one of it’s supported codecs.
Check Decklink and AJA products.

Look for the box above the window with a percentage in it (100%, 75%). Click on that and choose the option at the very top: FIT TO WINDOW.

Go to the FINAL CUT PRO HD menu and select AUDIO/VIDEO settings. make sure audio out is set to BUILT IN. If it is set to FIREWIRE DV, then the audio is being sent to your ADVC.

Video grabs of…what? Web movies? Something on your computer monitor? or from another video source like VHS?

If you want to change the speed of the clip, but not effect the duration of that clip in the timeline, you have to load the clip into the VIEWER by either double clicking on it, or hitting the MATCHFRAME button, then adjusting the speed. Then mark IN and OUT in the timeline and drop it in.
If you adjust the speed of the clip in the timeline, the clip retains the same duration, only now it is faster or slower, so it will contract or expand the timeline.
This is how FCP works.

the TITLE 3D that comes bundled with FCP work just fine for me. The plain title tool stinks.

Don’t use SimpleVideoOut to output the whole show. Use it to start the tape stripe…only black and record up to 1;01;00;00. Then you switch the deck TC settings to INT REGEN and Edit to Tape…from FCP.
Follow those instructions to a “T”

My question is, if you are outputting via firewire, why did you chose a DSR-1800 over a DSR-11? The DSR-11 can take an output, and even work with your timeline TC:

I only use the 1800 when outputting via component cables, so I am no help there.

Well…yes you can, but they aren’t in their “native” format, which is what people are wanting. When you capture with an Avid, you capture 15:1, 2:1, 1:1, 20:1…basically capturing all the footage as the SAME format. So, yes, it played from a DV25 deck, or a digibeta deck, but you captured it using Avid’s codecs, thus making them all uniform.
it is the mixing of native formats that some people want…and that cant be done easily.
