Stuttering of clip when played by viewer – please help!
I am on a Powerbook G4 working in FCP HD and I have been doing fine until today. When I drag or click on a clip to see it in the viewer, it stutters and I see a second or two of the clip then it freezes, but I can still hear the audio, then that freezes, then it jumps to like the middle of the clip and does the same thing over again. I have checked to make sure it is Fit to Window and it is. I am working off an external hard drive, Lacie, but I don’t understand why all of the sudden I would be having problems.
I did unplug the external hd and plugged it back in, but nothing seems to be working! Can anyone help me? Any info is much appreciated!!

Look for the box above the window with a percentage in it (100%, 75%). Click on that and choose the option at the very top: FIT TO WINDOW.

I did that and no change. It was already set to fit to window. I just tried exporting the clip to quicktime and then importing that back in and it played it just fine. Is that the only solution? I sure hope not, because I have a lot of clips and don’t think I have time to do that!

So I just figured out that I have Quicktime 7 and I have heard that 7 has a bug/doesn’t work right with 10.3.9/FCP HD. I don’t know if I know what I am talking about, I just know that yesterday I had a later version of Quicktime and it worked fine, my husband downloaded 7 last night and now I can’t get my clips to play right. Any correlation?? Sorry if I sound ignorant, I just don’t know what I would have done different to cause this stuttering problem!

If you’ve changed nothing else other than Quicktime, then it must be the culprit in this case. I’d go back to version 6 and try your clips again.
And don’t let your husband near your laptop again without supervision.

BEFORE WE GET TOO FAR…
Did you try the AUDIO MIXDOWN (as suggested) before you went to the trouble to export and re-import the sequence?
It has been shown to easily correct stuttering and many other similar problems.
It just takes a few seconds. -
I’m not sure I tried that. Forgive my ignorance again, but how would I do that?

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can often help you!
You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video slipping, drop-outs or freezes.
NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.
First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.
It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.
NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.
