I’ve had this issue with reference movies. my workaround was:
    1. open the problematic movie in quicktime player (not fcp)
    2. hit ‘search” and point to the place where the original is (the file which qt can’t find).
    3. after qt found the file, command-s to re-save the reference movie properly linked to the new location.
as for version 4 fcp couldn’t handle this right.

  • try drop2dv (it won’t bypass copy protection either)

you don’t have the blackmagic installed in that same computer you’re editing with, do you?
anyway deinterlacing is probably wrong. the film transfer probably has a pulldown pattern and is supposed to be interlaced. if the fields are in the wrong order in your reference dvd then something is wrong with your sequence settings or the software you’re using to create the dvd.
in both dvd studio pro and compressor there is a preference for setting the fields order when importing movies (‘automatic’ sometimes doesn’t get it right). set it to lower.

Our oldest workstation has that very same pci card. it’s a dual 500 g4 and runs fcp 4.1.1.
it must be a preferences or install problem.

about 1. I don’t know any special software but the clips in fcp are searchable once they are logged. you can search the metadata you entered in the log and capture window or the browser window (the browser window looks a bit like an xls, doesn’t it?)
…or you can export a batch list and import it with excel to create an xls (I have done this for docummentaries).

i can’t help you with number 2 at the moment.

I found another app to do this. it’s called ‘jes deinterlacer’. it’s free and does lots of useful conversions quite fast. look for it in versiontracker.

32 Khz and 16 bit is not a usual combination. are you sure it’s not 12 bit? i guess the sync problem might be caused by an odd bit rate conversion.
anyway i’d go for the quicktime method dave suggested.

did you try using opacity keyframes instead of transitions? that worked for me once but i’m not certain which fcp version it was.
“pre-compose” is the term in afterfx, “nesting” in fcp.
