[walter biscardi] “I saw G5 iMacs and Mini’s at Costco in Atlanta today and AppleCare was included in the purchase price.”

Funny. Costco (Price Club then) was where I bought my very first Mac many many moons ago…

Ah, but you’re missing one of the most important parts of the equation. The reason macs are so popular in the creative world isn’t because they’re nice & shiny, it’s because Mac OS X is so much more stable & less prone to conflicts, viruses & bugs than XP is.”

Excellent point, but Avid cares not about that…bottom line will look nicer if they focus on one OS, no matter what the platform. That has been proven to its user base many many times.

Now, if we could edit on the iPod….

hmmm, maybe I should have started a new thread with my ‘muse’ on Avid and Windows-only development.

Avid has struggled for years trying to sync releases for each OS, feature sets and the like. For example, the OSX version of XpressPro is woefully behind the PC version. Avid has to use valuable resources to code the same features for an OSX version. Now that Apple has opened the door to dual boot systems, I can see Avid cutting costs and focusing on Windows only development…even if you run it on a Mac platform. One of Apple’s advantages with FCP is that they were able to focus on one product and one platform. With the intel based systems and windows on a mac (that just SOUNDS weird), Apple is giving a bit of that advantage back…IMHO.

A colleague came up with the intriguing thought that now, with the ability to run Windows on a Mac, Avid might not develop for the Mac OS: “To use Avid, boot from the Windows side…and you also have all your old Mac favorites on the OSX side of the boot”.

Just a thought, but an interesting muse. Apple might have helped Avid out by going Intel. Cats and dogs living together…crazy!

    Hi Mark –

I am an old avid and ds guy so forgive my ingorance of these new fangled softwares.

Right now I am digitizing a clip from Dbeta from Log and Capture. When I set the in and out points, I can easily see where the machine via the window on the upper right of the screen. However, when I go into Capture Clip, the new ‘preparing to capture’ window covers the window that shows the tape machine current tc (as it is digitizing) in the Log and Capture window. there seems to be no option to separate the two during capture.

Also, is there a ‘tape eject’ button in the L & C mode that I am missing?

    Thanks in advance…

yeah, but this time I am capturing from a Dbeta deck (HD downconverts) from a machine room that is a long way away from the FCP suite. Kind of nuts that in the FCP IO you cannot see where the machine is at during a capture. Lets hope Steve Bayes brings that little piece of Avid heaven to FCP6!
