I am sittng in a finishing suite and a client called and asked if you can bring in Dbeta footage into FCP ‘compressed’ like you can in Avid to save drive space. I have blanked on this and have no anwer. can you?

Yes you can! Depending on what capture device you have, you will be able to digitize at different resolutions. For instance if you have an AJA Io you would be able to capture to DV resolution if you wanted to save space. Then you could online later at 10 bit uncompressed as long as your tapes have timecode and you log and capture correctly.

perfect…thats what I have is the AJA IO. So I can still come from my dbeta but put the capture prefs on DV NTSC and save a bunch of space, correct?

Absolutely! Have a look at the different capture presets available. Make sure to check the little box that says “show all” when you go to easy set ups. If you are coming in via SDI from the digibeta you could capture at DV which will save a ton of space but reduce quality or you could also capture as DVCPro50 which will give you more quality but take up a bit more space. If you want to work out your storage capabilities go to the AJA website to the support page and download their free storage calculator. It has just about every configuration you can think of.

The only caveat is that if you want to mix and match footage, they all have to be in the same codec.

For instance, if you want to add this Digibeta footage to an existing DV timeline, you have to digitize the digibeta into the dv codec.

If you choose to use dv50 (which is a nice compromise between quality and space as long as you aren’t doing a lot of effects) you’ll have to redigitize your dv footage into the DV50 codec.

yeah, basically I am bringing in HD downconverts on Dbeta and into FCP, then out again to a FW drive so that we may edit at home and such…

DVCPRO HD takes up a little bit more space than DV and is capable of running off of FW800 drives no problem. It will require an HD capture card to view out to an HD monitor. That way you are working in HD, not SD.

    If you’re working on 720p24 stuff, it’s only 6 Mb/sec. DV is 3.

It’s great if you are planning on reconforming back to uncompressed HD.

Just think of DV50 as your 20:1 or AVR3s avid compression. Except better quailty, so youcan see all the glitchs in the foottage an not annoyed your grader by using rubbish shots……

so when using the AJA io, use the capture preset, “AJA IO: SDi to DV”, or “AJA IO: YUV to DV” etc.. depending on how your digi is connected. then consolidate when finished and recapture at uncompressed res. If any of your decks have a firewire out of course you can connect using that and capture just using the straight DV setting.

    best wishes
