  • XP software for dual boot on new Intel Macs

Posted by Bob Cole on April 17, 2006 at 10:47 pm

The dual boot could be a lifesaver on location. But the idea of buying the Windows XP operating system just for this emergency use is a bit much.

If I have an old computer with XP on it, which I am willing to decommission, can I move the Win XP OS from the old machine to a new Intel Mac? How?

    Thanks.

A colleague came up with the intriguing thought that now, with the ability to run Windows on a Mac, Avid might not develop for the Mac OS: “To use Avid, boot from the Windows side…and you also have all your old Mac favorites on the OSX side of the boot”.

Just a thought, but an interesting muse. Apple might have helped Avid out by going Intel. Cats and dogs living together…crazy!

In order to install XP you need a FULL version of XP home or Pro INCLUDING service pack 2 (SP2), so not even a full older version (SP2 is around a year old or a bit longer) will install. You also need to perform the brief and simple firmware update now available for your intel Mac.

The Avid question is an interesting one. I suspect they are not the only developers ‘considering their options’ at the moment. What about Autodesk for example? With talk that OSX 10.5 may include proper virtualisation (ie. no reboot required to run windows apps), and with low cost virtual solutions like Paralells around, we may see the day that Apple are the only pro app developers left on OS X.

One thing you have to remember is workflow. As an editor, I generally work with Photoshop and sometimes Word, Quicktime, iPhoto, iTunes and/or After Effects open at the same time and bounce between them all. A dual-boot wouldn’t fit my workflow at all and I would have no interest in duplicating the apps on both OSX and XP.

Autodesk is going firmly down the Linux path.

You have word, itunes and iphoto open while you edit?

The point is that dual booting is a first step – virtualisation is already upon us, broadly transparent already. This negates any need to dual boot. Why bother to develop an OS X version if it’s a small part of your market, or even if it’s half your market? It has to save costs to go with the PC version, knowing Mac users can run it anyway.

Face it – the rules have changed, and the Mac software community is due some big changes.

    Bob,

The definitive answer to your XP question is as follows:

At some point during the installation process, XP installation will come to a screeching halt and a mesage from Microsoft will inform you that your processor (or computer) does not match the processor of record on file that was matched to your software when you registered XP online. At that point you will need to call Microsoft, and you will explain to the Indian person on the line in Calcutta, that you are moving your OS to a new computer. He will ask you few questions and you will be set from that point.

Keep in mind that the Creative Cow stands for “Communities of the World.” Thusly, all the forums here are international in nature and your statement above could be taken as derogatory towards the people of India. There are quite a few of our friends from India who participate in many of the forums in this community and I would suggets you refrain from editorial comments such as those above in the future.

It will suffice to note that he will need to call Microsoft Technical Support which is what I suggested in my first post.

[Ben Holmes] “You have word, itunes and iphoto open while you edit?”

Not in every session, but yes. For example, an offline edit using music and photos. iTunes to preview the music cuts, iPhoto to organize the images. Then there’s an e-mailed script revision. Safari and Word to get and open the revised script. I also do credits that way. Have the client give me a Word doc, copy and paste the text so that I can build the graphics in Photoshop or AE and then bring into FCP or Avid.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

Just a couple of points here from somebody who has gone through boot camp:-

    1) During the installation process you will get a warning from Microsoft that it has detected hardware that it doesn’t support and recommends that you quit – The Apple instructions say just ignore the message 😉

    2) Yes you need a full copy of XP & service pack 2, but then you need to do 38, yes 38 updates to get the software up to date, granted most of these happen at once, but its a lot!
