Except that the Mac version of Avid is the only NLE software to actually take advantage of Core Video via the Noise Industries plug-ins.

I take exception to this inference Walter, and I assure you, any such inference is purely in the mind of the reader. I simply stated a well-known fact, that Microsoft has outsourced its support to India.
If you would like to debate the wisdom of U.S. companies outsourcing jobs overseas, I’m certain you will find any number of people willing to participate in that debate. In fact, Lou Dobbs discusses the topic every weeknight on CNN. Having a point of view on that subject does not constitute anything derogatory toward the people of India.

So if the user calls Microsoft and gets a tech support person on the phone from India, what does that mean? The service is sub-standard because they are in India? The service would be better with an American operator on the phone? Your need to specifically point out where the tech support is now located, especially when it has no bearing on the original question in this thread, just seems to imply that the service is lacking somehow.

First, you tend to forget that while Apple may be a small part of the OVERALL PC market, it’s HUGE in the content creation market. Even if it’s ONLY 50%, that ain’t insignificant.
Second, as many on the other NLE sites can attest, it’s NOT just the Win XP/2000 OS. Most of the high end (or higher end) PC NLEs such as Avid & Matrox Axio have quite specific hardware requirements, and will not run on any generic box (although some do work well, many also don’t). Just being able to run XP on a Mac doesn’t mean that it’s now fully capable of supporting Avid.
Finally, the 800 lb gorilla of Windows Vista is looming in the not so distant future with very little mention of how successfully it has been installed on the Intel Mac platform, let alone on how it even works. The last I read was that someone was “somewhat” successful in installing it, although not without issues. Again, and that’s just the installation. Which leads to (and take this from someone who’s platform agnostic):
I’m constantly amused by those PC adherents who refuse to consider a Mac because they already have a “substantial” investment in PC hardware. They’ll be in for some nasty surprises when they find out they’ll be forced to upgrade when Vista’s release. If I’m not mistaken (and I’d like to be corrected if I’m wrong), it’s only the most current PC hardware (like the duo cores) that will fully support and Vista, and work properly.

I totally agree with Walter. The location of Microsoft tech support has no bearing on this.
Besides, in any case, Microsoft tech support does not operate out of Kolkata (the correct name for Calcutta). Nor, in fact do they operate out of anywhere in India. If you call Microsoft tech support anywhere in N America, you will be actually speaking to a person in N America. If your issue is something that cannot be handled there, it is escalated to the research centre in India probably.
Further, would things be different if you were actually speaking to an American sitting in Bangalore? Or an Indian, sitting in Redmond? You had stated…

ok, all outsourcing aside, the following is at hand:
1) Windows vista is already been succesfully installed and is being speed tested on several computers.
2) as a sidenote, they’ve (and by they i mean computer wizz’s across the world) have tripple botted with linux as well, for all those who, idon’t know, have a reason for that.
3) I think we’re looking at this wrong, as we begin to “dual boot” and “virtualize” many people will see the power behind macs, I forget what tech magazine recently published an article headlined “The fastest p.c. ever, A mac” wheather that means people will keep going with windows, or windows will blend into mac, after all, it’s cheaper to buy windows o.s. then a licenced microstoft machine, companies like del and gateway will slowly wither and systems will streamline into apple as it takes the market share, (if as we’ve said, companies begin to onyl develope for windows, for the sheer purpase of dual booting). The market won’t support “extra programing” eventually people will relize, why buy a brand new G(insert # here)for X dollars, than buy say vista for this example, for another 300 dollers plus. it’s marketing streamlining, basic economics.
4) as previusly stated, avid can’t just be stuck onto a machine, a full avid set up needs hardware not supported by a g5

I have no ill will toward the people of India, including those who answer tech support lines, so, I guess you and Walter can just get off your soap boxes and get back to work now.

I’m confused here. Do you mean that I need to transfer the license only from a PC that is less than a year old? Or, as was posted later, do you mean that I will just have to go through umpty-ump updates with an older full version?

You never would have and that’s my point.
If tech support was in Washington you never would have said, “you will need to call Microsoft and you will explain to the American person on the line in Redmond.”
Because Microsoft is outsourcing some work to India, you went out of your way to mention that “you will need to call Microsoft, and you will explain to the Indian person on the line in Calcutta.”
Neil Sadwelkar is one of the guys I thought about when I first read your post as he has been a longtime contributor to the Cow and we’ve spoken many times off forum. He’s a great guy and is just one of many international folks I communicate thanks to the worldwide reach of the Cow.
