August 17, 2006 at 11:10 pm in reply to: A warning about the new Avid Xpress Pro 5.5 andn grouping of clipsI’m not talking about the realtime quad-split that arrived with the version 5 on Mac (It’s been on PC for a while) I’m talking about the actual grouping of clips. If you have a multicam shoot of more than 4 cameras or a music video where you might have 20 or 30 takes then you want to group waaaaay more than 4 clips into a group. And it has always worked, at least on the mac side, until this upgrade to 5.5. I made this post to let people know as it appears it was kind of an accident. If you use this workflow regularly then you will be burned by this… as I was yesterday.

July 25, 2006 at 6:52 pm in reply to: command to highlight clip from sequence in browserOften on my system it doesn’t. It often seems very dependent on what type of clip you are trying to reveal. Strangely, master clips seem to work less often than subclips. I don’t understand why it doesn’t work consistently and I do have the proper auto-select on and I have watched this feature for a long time. My old Avid workflow of a quick match frame and find bin was always very efficient and I’ve wished it would work that same in FCP for a while. Don’t get me going on the FCP match frame as I’ve always felt that was very inefficient as well… compared to Avid. But of course they are different edit systems. if we could only get them to combine the best of both …….

July 25, 2006 at 3:27 pm in reply to: command to highlight clip from sequence in browserI think what Shane would like (and I would too) is something like Avid’s Find Bin command. Shift F in FCP is the Reveal Master Clip command but it seems to be very dependent on what kind of clip you have selected as to whether it will reveal the master clip or not. In Avid, no matter what kind of clip you have in the viewer, you can always use the Find Bin command to go right to that clip. It’s very handy.

Oh…. and the merged clips that have been cut into the timeline WILL reconnect fine.

Are you zoomed way out? The more timeline you are seeing the longer it takes to draw the waveforms. I always zoom in a bit and they display much quicker.

Kevin is right…whatever works for you. But I still think FCP’s keyboard layout wasn’t thought out very well. Sure it doesn’t seem like a big deal to push option+d to clear the IN point… but when you do that over and over all day long those modifier keys really add up. And I would bet that most people clear the IN point way more than the use the distort tool. It was a great day when we got the mappable keyboard as everyone can make it exactly as the want!

I don’t think you can apply a Motion only filter in FCP. you could find those folders you mention and give it a try. Let us know what you find!

Avid can import any QT file but that (and anything else it imports for that matter) will be converted to Avid’s omf format. You will lose timecode and the transcoding process can’t be good for quality. And if you have a lot of file it could take a while. I would recapture the footage. Of course Avid Xpro on Mac can’t take HDV just yet. Not sure about an Adrenaline.

I did just that way back in FCP version 3… I think that was the one that allowed keyboard mapping. I went in and mapped all the FCP keys I could to match my Avid settings. I’d say I got them about 75% of the way there. It makes so much more sense to push ‘D’ to clear an in point than does option+D. The thing to be aware of is there are certain funtions that don’t operate the same way in both app… match frame is a good example. I then took some Avid stickers and stuck ’em on my keyboard and that’s the one I’ve used ever since!
