  • Avid Keyboard Layout on FCP

I’ve been back doing an edit on Avid after a 3 year block on FCP.
While I never missed it when I went over to FCP – a far better one-stop-shop
    for a one-man-band like myself.
But ooooh it was really nice to be back on Avid – it has an elegance of workflow
that I’ve never found of FCP.
I found that I was back almost never touching the mouse and editing faster or at least smoother than
    I do on FCP.
So, to cut a long story short, is there an easy resource of keyboard layouts available that would
allow me to map my FCP to Avid workflow.
I know it’s a bit “apples and oranges” but I’d rather not splash out on Avid for a slightly better workflow.

    Thanks in advance JM

FCP keyboard is fully customizable. Search for Keyboard layout.

I did just that way back in FCP version 3… I think that was the one that allowed keyboard mapping. I went in and mapped all the FCP keys I could to match my Avid settings. I’d say I got them about 75% of the way there. It makes so much more sense to push ‘D’ to clear an in point than does option+D. The thing to be aware of is there are certain funtions that don’t operate the same way in both app… match frame is a good example. I then took some Avid stickers and stuck ’em on my keyboard and that’s the one I’ve used ever since!

I understand perfectly where you are coming from. I do a substantial amount of work on Avids, but I have found that the absolute worst thing you can do for your workflow on FCP is to try to force it to be an Avid. There are just too many things that superficially appear to work the same but really are fundamentally different. Even though you can do it the same way in FCP as Avid, it may not be the most efficient way on FCP…etc.

I don’t suggest you do this. As good as an idea as this may seem, I think it’s detrimental to do so, ultimately. I learned on Avid and then learned FCP, and even though that was before the remappable keyboard, I found that in the long run, it was easier to keep the two systems compartmentalized in my noggin – keyboard shortcuts and workflow included.

But whatever works for you. I have heard there is an Avid>FCP keyboard preset floating around on the net somewhere. Try Google.

Kevin is right…whatever works for you. But I still think FCP’s keyboard layout wasn’t thought out very well. Sure it doesn’t seem like a big deal to push option+d to clear the IN point… but when you do that over and over all day long those modifier keys really add up. And I would bet that most people clear the IN point way more than the use the distort tool. It was a great day when we got the mappable keyboard as everyone can make it exactly as the want!
