Tom, I made the conversion over the summer from CineWave to Kona 2.

I did have to resurrect several CineWave captured projects thru the Kona 2. Although the AJAYUV codec is supposed to be CineWave friendly, I had inconsistent results. I most cases I just re-rendered the timeline to the Apple 10 bit codec with excellent results.

In one case, where the Kona 2 timeline had a multi-layered video effect, I got some video artifacts using the 10 bit codec after rendering. I re-set the video processing tab (Sequence settings) to an 8 bit render rather than 10 bit. (Remember, CineWave was an 8 bit codec, which is how my original footage had been captured) and this took, care of the artifacting.

All in all it was a pretty easy transition. Uninstalled the Cinewave software and card, install the Kona 2 card and software and away I went.

    Good Luck.

No, I did not know that. That’s why these forums are so great! As are the people who post & reply on them

  • Strangely enoughw When I double clicked on an .swf file a couple of weeks ago, it opened in Live Type.

Then I exported it as a Quicktime and it played in FCP5 without any problem.

Everybody is playing nicely here, but you’ve got to do a clean install of Tiger. I tried the easy way out, (just by doing the upgrade) and it was problematic.

As a matter of fact I used Carbon Copy Cloner to back up my G5 boot drive to a Firewire. Wiped the primary drive in the G5, then re-installed all apps from original CDs. Then moved any support files back from the firewire.

3 months now and everybody plays nicely. Tiger 10.4.2, FCP 5.02 & Kona 1.1.2.

If your considering HD or HDV in your workflow then Kona2 is required. The I/O is standard def only.

The Kona2 and the I/O will co-exist nicely together on the same platform. Another way to go is Kona2 for your HD & SDI inputs and outputs, paired with an I/Ola for analog sources.

I recently made the switch from CineWave. The only feature I miss is the need to render DV material in an 8 or 10bit timelime.

I have loaded FCP 5.0.2, without having upgraded to X.4.2. I am having Medea issues and I want to be sure those are cleared up before throwing another monkey wrench into the mix.

At the moment I’m running OK, but between FCP5 & Tiger, this has been one of the buggier upgrades.

May 19, 2005 at 4:01 am in reply to: SONY ‘B-STOCK’ MONITORS

B-Stock Monitors, or any equipment for that matter, means it is not “Brand New” out of the box. Usually that means it was previously used as a demo. Perhaps at NAB, or as a Sales Rep’s demo. The gear is then sent back to the factory to be re-packed, and re-inventoried as “B-Stock” and sold for a lower price.

As for the Sony PVM-20L5, they’ve been discontinued by Sony In favor of the New “Luma” series flat panels. You can find discussions about the merits of Flat Panels vs. CRT below in this forum. A couple os strikes against the flat panels is Inferior black levels, and the lack of inputs. The Luma monitors don’t have as many input options as the PVM-20L5. You can still find the PVM-20L5 multi-format monitor in several supply houses. I just had one delivered yesterday. Got it from B&H in New York. $2,799, plus shipping. I didn’t get the HD-SDI option. It’s just as much as the monitor. I’ve seen prices fron $2,650 to $3,150 for the HD-SDI card. I’m going to monitor HD via the Kona’s HD component analog, until I can get a much better price on the HD-SDI option card.

Hey Walter, It’s nice to see alot of the old CineWane(sic) community hanging out over here.

Have you seen any audio/video sync issues going through the converters?
