    Hello:

What is the difference in real world terms, between Sony ‘B-Stock’ and ‘non B-Stock’ monitors? Also, I’ve read posts praising the PVM20L5/(1) monitor — what’s the going price for one of these? Any recommends on a good new/used distributor that has stock? If I recall correctly, it’s not necessary to have the SDI board, you can go in component from the Kona 2, correct?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Best, JIM.

B-Stock Monitors, or any equipment for that matter, means it is not “Brand New” out of the box. Usually that means it was previously used as a demo. Perhaps at NAB, or as a Sales Rep’s demo. The gear is then sent back to the factory to be re-packed, and re-inventoried as “B-Stock” and sold for a lower price.

As for the Sony PVM-20L5, they’ve been discontinued by Sony In favor of the New “Luma” series flat panels. You can find discussions about the merits of Flat Panels vs. CRT below in this forum. A couple os strikes against the flat panels is Inferior black levels, and the lack of inputs. The Luma monitors don’t have as many input options as the PVM-20L5. You can still find the PVM-20L5 multi-format monitor in several supply houses. I just had one delivered yesterday. Got it from B&H in New York. $2,799, plus shipping. I didn’t get the HD-SDI option. It’s just as much as the monitor. I’ve seen prices fron $2,650 to $3,150 for the HD-SDI card. I’m going to monitor HD via the Kona’s HD component analog, until I can get a much better price on the HD-SDI option card.

[Scott Shucher] “I’m going to monitor HD via the Kona’s HD component analog, until I can get a much better price on the HD-SDI option card.”

I think the HD-SDI card for that particular monitor is a waste of money. After all, it’s 800 lines whether you install that option or not, so I’d rather save the money and put it towards other equipment since the component output from the Kona 2 is so sharp on that monitor anyway. As you note, the HD-SDI card is more than the monitor.

I’ve heard nothing good about the new Luma series and plan to add a second PVM20L5/1 before they disappear. Fantastic monitor at a great price. It’s a shame everyone has to phase out the CRT’s, but change is a continuous part of our business.
