Those presets are for dimensions, PAR (pixel aspect ratio) and color space. If you bring in a large photo (larger than the film/video preset you’ve selected) then you’ll have to scale that image down to fit. It won’t do this automatically. Another thing: there’s an NTSC Safe Colors filter in Photoshop that you can apply so your colors will be broadcast safe.

You can setup your swatch palette, brushes, etc., and “save as template”. Then do “new from template”.
There used to be a way to save a blank Illustrator file with all of that set, into a folder somewhere in the program directory so each time you opened Illustrator it would open with this blank document setup with your favorite colors, etc.

Illustrator only – points, lines, curves are defined mathematically in Illustrator, not by a jagged bitmap as in photoshop, so your edges will be perfectly smooth.

In the links panel, select an image and on the fly-out menu (button in the upper right), select embed.

Do not use JPEG, use TIFF, and because it’s going to print, make sure your image is CMYK from Photoshop. Do not rasterize your image, go to the link panel and embed the image into your file, then save it as a Press Ready PDF.

Don’t make it 300dpi….use a really low resolution…so, 120inx60in, but at 25 or 50 dpi. Low resolutions work for billboards. Ask whoever is going print the billboard what specs will work best.

So far, I do them by intuition and zoom in a lot to make them look properly formated.
OR
In Illustrator, use guides and CTRL-U or APPLE-U for smart guides.
The latest versions of Photoshop has the ability to automatically detect edges to help you line things up as well.
