  • Hi! Thanks for your reply. It occurs if I have a compound path made up of two or more objects with transparency, then trimming those objects – they no longer reflect a 60% value for transparency, but 100%. The object appears to have transparency, however it’s value is 100%, so it can never go back to being 100% opaque.

    Thanks for your reply!

Are you saying the Component Video codec is uncompressed? I’m trying to find technical information about the codec but I’m coming up short.

I’m creating animations in AE, from still images, some vector art illustrations, sometimes incorporating stock footage (Motion JPEG B).

Thanks for that! So, is there any reason they would ask for a Quicktime movie using the Component Video codec vs. ProRes (HQ)? I looked at the white paper for ProRes and it appears to be the same – 10-bit, Y’CbCr 4:2:2.

.cr2 and .dng are both raw formats – no need to convert.

Save as – PDF. In the dialog that comes up, select “Smallest File Size” in the Adobe PDF Preset dropdown. Under “Compression”, adjust the settings to get the quality you want – something I’ve noticed, sometimes setting your resolution to 200dpi or more and using the “Smallest File Size” works pretty good – makes a nice, clear image and has a small file size.

Maybe check “Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities” when making the PDF.

  • That function is probably wishful thinking. If you’re running into issues like you are, finalize typesetting in Photoshop and don’t rely on this special function. Whenever you’re dealing with a printer, make your file simple and easy so there are no issues in pre-production.

maybe use a smallish brush tool at 100% opacity on a new layer to “re-trace” an object and cover the line art, then fill that shape. Or try the “refine edge” tool which I think only works on a mask. Sounds like it’s going to be a bunch of hard work if the original drawings are traditional pencil/or pen vs a digital method like a cintiq.

I’d make filled triangle shapes, overlayed over each other and transparency – either opacity variations or blending modes.
