Mask off the text and adjust the mask frame by frame. It’s probably not as many frames as you think. It’s a lot of work doing it this way, but it would work.

Color correct your clip to transform it into a night scene – many ways to do this, but basically you’ll be either be using levels, or hue and lightness adjustments, or curves, or a combination of several, etc. For the fireflies, I’d be tempted to create a small 2 x 2 or 3 x 3 pixel object (or whatever size you want the flies to be) in photoshop, import them into after effects and add a slight yellow glow. Duplicate the layer and offset it to add several flies to your scene. for realism, animate the glow to make it fade in and out, and animate the intensity. make it a 3d object and animate it slightly towards the camera for depth realism.

I prefer Lacie monitors . . . actually I’m still using an Electron Blue CRT for more accurate color for print and motion design, with an external monitor to display accurate NTSC colors. From what I recall, I believe the Lacie LCD’s are more accurate than other LCD’s (in their price range at least) for broadcast due to their 12-bit gamma. They are more expensive though. Dell makes great stuff, so, if you’re worried about getting acurate color for broadcast, get an external NTSC monitor.

Have you tried color grading your video? Try adjusting levels – blacks and midtones, adjust using Color Balance to get the right color you’re looking for, and adjust saturation and lightness using the Hue/Saturation control. Or, simply try adding a new solid above your clip – and choose a dark steel greyish blue color (R:49, G:56, B:69), and set the mode to Multiply. There are lots of ways to do this. It all depends on the exact “look” you’re after.
Hope that helps!

Maybe you could start by posting your reel here, or a link to a trailer for your film / documentary. Make a name for yourself by promoting and participating in forums whenever you can. Many people will be reading your posts. Why not provide a link to your work so they can see it. I’m curious about your work . . . let’s see it.
Good luck!

It may be your video card . . . check the Adobe site for Open GL 2 card / After Effects compatability:
https://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/opengl.html
Maybe it’s the amount of video card memory, the speed of the RAMDAC’s, youre hard drive speed, the number of apps running at the same time, the number of effects applied to your composition. Lots of factors involved.

Thanks for the reply!
Should I use square pixel aspect ratio in Photoshop, or DV NTSC .9?
Ans, in FCP, there’s a drop down menu for zoom percentage, and at the bottom, an item to select “display square pixels”. Should this be checked on or off?
Thanks again!
