Depending on what your budget is, you can get a Boxx system https://www.boxxtech.com/, ProMax sells high end Mac bundles, etc.

Depending on the look you’re after of course, try desaturating your clip 100%, duplicate the clip and set the mode to Overlay. Adjust the opacity from there to get the look you want. You can also blur that layer for a softer look for certain scenes. Also try creating a vignette. Just some ideas. Let us know what you come up with.

  • Great video, thanks for sharing.

Use a splatter graphic as a matte – create a black and white paint splatter, import that into AE. Drop it into a layer above the clip you want to mask off. In the TrkMt pulldown menu for the clip you want to mask off, select the paint splatter layer as a Luma Matte and voila!

Try rendering out a Quicktime Sorenson 3 clip from Premiere – great codec for retaining color and quality, while compressing the video down. Depending on how small you need to make the file size, you can cut the frames per second in half, reduce the dimensions of your final video, etc. Lots of things to make the video smaller.

I think you’d have a pretty tough time creating a realistic car explosion in post unless you’re doing some amazing 3-d work with parts flying off, etc. Explosions are pretty dynamic. Besides, wouldn’t it be fun to blow up a car?

Try double clicking the clip in the viewer, does it look sharp there? I’ve noticed that too with FCP . . . but it renders out ok. For some reason FCP previews it jaggy like that in the canvas. Make sure your clip dimensions match FCP. I remember reading somewhere that FCP uses a different square-pixel image dimension. I’m not sure exactly. Do a test of a short clip – export it out of FCP and see if it looks sharp.

June 27, 2007 at 7:59 am in reply to: color correction Question [example included]

You can definitely achieve a similar look in After Effects, and, with enough time, you can get very close to the same colors and effects in that video. They’re selectively color grading areas (primaries and secondaries) among other effects such as tracking the headlights, fake mountains, etc. I spent about an hour and came up with this:

    https://www.littleblackbird.com/bmw_vid/bmw.mov

It’s not an exact copy of their video obviously, but it’s a similar “night” type of shot that I think you’re looking for. (The shot I corrected is on the right in the above video). To achieve this type of look, color grade using levels, hue / saturation and color balance. Sometimes adjusting levels or other color correction tools affect areas that you’d rather not adjust. In that case, duplicate your layer and mask off the area you’d like to adjust. There’s lots of ways to do this. Lots of color correction tools not mentioned and other techniques.

    Hope that helps,

    Scott

You can try reading up on the various codecs here: https://codecs.onerivermedia.com/

I’ve been using Apple PNG 4:4:4 . . . it’s lossless, and smaller in size than animation. One River Media has done a bunch of testing with various codecs showing quality and file size, etc. Very useful site.
