300dpi for large format projects is not necessary. 150dpi, 100dpi, 72dpi and even lower will work. 50ft, 50mph is the rule.

It’s just a graphic that is masked off which is revealed by keyframing from right to left over time.

You can get them from a number of places – if you have a digital camera, you can shoot textures yourself, you can shoot buildings, people, etc, then manipulate them in Photoshop and drop them into After Effects. You can also purchase stock photography from sites such as fotolia.com, shutterstock.com, etc. There are free reseources to. Use google and make sure the images you put into a project can be used commercially (a paid project).

It should work the same way a gaussian blur works. Nothing special to do. Try again in a new document.

Yes, you can work with a smaller “proxy” video then replace it with the larger version when you’ve done all of your effects and want to render out.

Not sure about a solution to the problem in your first question. For the second one, replace the image with something smaller, then before rendering, replace it with your high res file.

Subpixel? Intriguing. I can see how an object might have antialiased edges that may make an object appear to be thin, but i’ve not heard of something smaller than a pixel.
