Can anyone recommend a way to get this look?
Posted by Ron Whitaker on February 24, 2012 at 9:01 pmI found these two images on one of my favorite photography websites, 1x.com. To me, the look of these images is so stunning. I love the surreal feel, and the muted colors.
Though these are still photographs, I was wondering if anyone would have a clue as to how to achieve the “look” of these photos within a video clip in Vegas?
Are there any plugins out there that could provide that look?
Thanks.

February 24, 2012 at 9:22 pmThe only thing that comes to my mind off the bat is using the “Sobel” filter I’ve used in Digital Fusion, and if you mix it only about 10% (or less?) you might get something approaching that. Just a guess, though…

February 24, 2012 at 10:13 pmI’m not sure what part of the “look” you’re trying to achieve. It looks to me like some sort of vignette was applied to darken the outer edges of the pics and possibly some sort of sepia color toning and possibly some Photoshop type filters. Again, not sure what exactly you are trying to duplicate but I took a picture and added a Sony Generated Media black gradient, then applied a Film Effects to that media. I put some grain, a yellow/green sepia tint, some dust and scratches (both at a level of 20.0). Below are before and after pictures, and the screen shots of the settings I used.
Hope that gives you some ideas.

February 25, 2012 at 2:38 amAdd a texture layer above your image – shoot a photo of rough texture like a sidewalk, a wood table, scratched rusty metal, etc., and put that into a layer above your image. Then change the blending mode of this layer to overlay, or multiply, etc. to get the desired effect. You can find some free texture images here:

February 25, 2012 at 11:48 amThose are good architectural textures in the link you gave.
Just a tip: If you want to download all those items without having to click every one and saving them individually, you can use a plugin called Flashgot. It’s used with Foxfire. You can set it to download all those images at once. Same goes for music.

Check out GenArts’ Sapphire Edge plug-in. Their Film Looks can come very close to what you’re looking for.Cheers for now,

February 26, 2012 at 10:30 pmcorrect me if I am wrong but I think he means the color and lighting of the photograph.
Don’t really see much of a texture over lay on the first photo.
Give a search engine Epic Photo color tutorials a try. -

That’s exactly what I was looking for! I never even thought of looking for “epic” in my search!
Anyway, I found the perfect Photoshop tutorial here:

Now I just need to figure out how to translate those steps into Vegas to get that look for video!
