can I ask you for a more detailed explanation?
What do you mean by corresponding Time Codes? I Have a slate and clap before each take, but the Audio recorder and the Mark lll had no synced Time Codes.
So you would edit with the onboard sound, and then throw the right sound clips in the rough are of the Video and let PE sync it then?
I am not sure, I fully understood your workflow.

Sound weird. Why don’t you just swap manually the order of the FXs around?
Besides, the Compressor is not so good in FCP.
Get Speech Cleaner from Izotope. Way better.

If you really saved it the right way, re-connected the clips the right way, and all is fine with your HardDisk and you also checked that the Scratch Disk is set to the Disk in Question, then it might be something inside FC.
Try once to Trash all Preference Files and Plist files and see if it’s gone.

I totally have to back you up on this one…Shooting in HD and then immediately downscaling is a bit like driving a Ferrari with a VW Beatle motor inside.
I do agree with Michael, that most Compression Software does a crapy job in down scaling. Even MPEG Streamclip. I just did a whole test series: It does a nice job on edges, aliasing and moiret, but is totally unacceptable when it comes to truthfulness to Color and making the footage way darker, often crushing the Blacks.
If you do not have the money for a good Black Magic or AJA card to downscale hardware related, it’s a tough call.
What is the story about Shake? I keep hearing that from you, Raphael.
Are there still copies to get? Shake is complicated – will I easily understand how to use it for downscaling footage? Because I am very sad about results I get from FC, Motion, After Effects, Streamclip and Compressor as well as Episode.

I love my HD projects, when I upload them on YT and VIMEO, but on SD DVD they look way worse than SD Footage worked onto a DVD – I have to agree with Michael there.

What is your scroll text done with? Try the Boris Text Scroll and ad a little Gaussian Blur to it – should solve the problem.

Here is my way, which seems to look very good on YT:

Export first QT Movie to make a master in original HD quality.
Going directly from TL to Compressor takes way longer encoding time.
The final Master QT Export, you open in Compressor.
Drop a QT 7 compatibel H.264 preset from the Web/Download Preset Folder: The preset H.264 LAN.
The adjust following parameters:

– Encoder Tab: Video set to Multi Pass (if you don’t have time, single pass is fine as well), change data rate to 5000 kbits/sec, Audio 224 Kb/sec

– Geometry Tab: Set frame size to 100% of Source for HD on YT

There go go. Usually those settings look great as HD on YT.

I made following test, very short, since I am under deadline pressure before leaving for shooting to the States:

1.) with MPEG Streamclip since some said it’s very good. It is very fast, and in terms of Moire and aliasing it does the BEST job, but makes the footage a lot darker and shifts colors too much.

2.) Direct in Compressor with Frame Controls seems to be best, but in terms of Moire and aliasing less good than Streamclip. Only if you switch anti-aliasing on, but then it takes till the dawn of time, and it’s not working when you have long footage and little time.

3.) I mentioned a special script somebody wrote and posted it on COW (see above this post)…I still have to try that one.

One more things is sure: I had some sharpening done in my DSLR footage since it was shot flat, this I had to remove, since it made a big difference later in the SD version of the footage.

Thanx Raphael. Learned a lot again, but unfortunately, purchasing a new software is not an option for me right now.
So, I just need to know, which option is the best one for now:

1.) Export as HD from FCP and then doing the downscaling in compressor in the same run than encoding it to MPEG2.

2.) Same as one, but doing Downsizing, Encoding to MPEG 2 in 2 different steps in Compressor.

3.) Export HD film from FCP, importing it again into FCP and exporting it from out a PAL SD Timeline and then encoding the SD Film in Compressor.

4.) Downscaling in After Effects, and then encoding SD result from AE in Compressor to MPEG2.

Will it help to use some smooth and blur settings in Compressor, to smoothen the downscaling?
