Creative Cow has had some podcasts in the past, but it takes a lot of time to keep them up.
I’ve tried to think of a podcast that might be manageable. What do you think of a weekly tips and tricks podcast or a weekly podcast that talked about different filters and effects?

The delete under F13 should delete a clip and not close the gap.
The delete above the arrow keys deletes the clip and closes the gap.
If it isn’t working for you, check to see if all of your auto selects are on or if there are other clips interfering with removing the gap.
You could also create a new timeline, bring in a clip and put a could of edits in it and delete the middle part of the clip with both keys to see how they are different.

I don’t use it, but Mackie has a great interface you should look at. That’s mostly what I say at NAB when people had an interface for FCP or Soundtrack.

Using the shift key as a modifier is the way to go for selecting forward or back.
I also use the option key to modify several other commands.
As far as zooming, I’m just in the habit of clicking in the grey first, but I wish that FCP gave you some more ways to modify preferences for things like that.

You might also need to make sure that the SHOW ALL button is selected in the easy setup selection menu.
If it’s still not listed, just create your own as has already been stated in the thread.

Copy everything (all video files, audio files, stills, FCE project file) to the new comptuer and open it using FCP6. (you don’t need render files)
But once you’re in FCP6, you can’t go back to FCE.

Media Manager can handle this workflow better than what you did. There are several different ways of doing what you want though and it looks like you figured out one of them.

Sending a 4 minute video in a 10MB file isn’t a great option. I’d suggest you start looking into ftp options or other websites that will let you upload files for others to download.

There’s always a learning curve to new software. For me, I work in After Effects. Motion is a really cool program and I’ve opened it up dozens of times thinking, “Today’s the day I’m going to build a graphic in Motion.” About 15 minutes later, I’m back in After Effects because I just can’t get my head a round Motion.
I think that the for most non linear editing software, the difference isn’t that big. Most of them have the same basic concepts of editing. The best way to get started is by probably getting some training. Many people don’t and spend years doing things the hard way.
In my opinion, FCP is really quite intuitive for people starting out, yet offers pros the power and functionality that they need.
One of the things I really like about FCP is that one company is making the computer, operating system, and the editing software that I use. On PC, that’s normally three different companies.
Finally, FCP is a very flexible system and easy to upgrade at a low cost. You can start with just an iMac and expand to a system capable of playing back 2K files.
FCS2 isn’t perfect, but it’s been a great solution for me.
