If the files are true 59.94, I like to use Cinema Tools.
Open the clip
Choose conform
Select the frame rate
Select okayThis will just remap the 60 frames over the frame rate you want.
But if there are any duplicate frames, definitely use the frame rate converter.

That’s where many people don’t like how FCP does frame conversions. I don’t like duplicated frames personally. I’ve also seen them become a much bigger problem when going to DVD. That’s why I prefer to convert 24 or 25 to 29.97 using Nattress. I don’t do a lot of 25 to 29.97, but I deal with 24 a lot.

Create a replace text script in Automator and save it as a plug-in for the finder.
Open Automator
Search for rename
Drag rename to the area on the right
Select Don’t Add
Open the options twirly thing
Select show action when run
Change the first pulldown menu to whatever you want the default selection to be (you’ll be able to change it when you use it in the finder)
Now select File – Save as Plug-in
Name it and make sure it is a plug-in for the finder.Now in the finder select the group of files you want. Right click a select Automator – then your plugin.
Customize your settings and hit continue.
I use this all the time to replace spaces with underscores when posting files (our ftp doesn’t like spaces).
It also comes in very handy when compressor adds extra stuff to the names of compressed files.

The two programs that you might be able to see a difference in with the 256MB VRAM is Color and Motion.
Currently Color doesn’t have full support for Nvidia cards. It will only use 8-bit for for the internal Color processing currently. Plus, there isn’t any video out support.
For Motion 3, currently it sounds like it’s not taking advantage of the extra RAM in the graphics processor, but that could change with an update.
For the rest of the programs, you won’t be able to tell a difference. If I were making the decision, I’d go with the 128MB card, but up the hard drive for sure.

I don’t know of anything in FCP that will let you do it, but there might be a script or automator action that someone created. I don’t know of any though.
You can save some time by changing the in the canvas or viewer to open (middle top button). Then having your auto selects selecting only the subtitles. This will cause you to only have to move the playhead and the new clip will automatically open in the viewer to whatever tab the last clip was opened to.
If you turn off all over video tracks, you can just use the up and down arrow keys to go to the next clip. This should save you a lot of time.

A two drive FW800 device can work great for SD. If you to 10-bit uncompressed (29MB/sec) then you might have some problems depending on what you’re doing. FW800 maxes out at about 80MB/sec.
A two drive SATA RAID maxes out at around 100-110MB/sec. It’s definitely faster.

You can also use the Channel Offset filter to separate different colors. Then if you add the Channel Blur filter, you can selectively blur the separate channels. Just play around until you get something you like.

You probably don’t want to hear it, but I would use STKPRO. When you show is ready, export the show as a single audio file (or export all of the dialogue and music in different files) and take it into Soundtrack and do what you want to it. Then export a single file back to FCP.
For your simple projects, it can’t be that hard to export an audio file and open another program. It might even be easier because you don’t have to put a filter on every audio clip (though there are shortcuts for that).
