I just got the firestore and transfered some files into FCP6. Naturally all the files have crazy numbers. How do I rename these in a batch?
For example, I shoot 10 clips of a horse running, How can I batch rename this to horse running and have them numbered in sequence?

I don’t think you can do this in Final Cut (unless there are new features in FCP6). You could do it with applescript (or maybe with automator) and have it rename the files one at a time based on their creation date in the finder. Otherwise, I think you have to do it manually.

Create a replace text script in Automator and save it as a plug-in for the finder.

    Open Automator
    Search for rename
Drag rename to the area on the right
    Select Don’t Add
    Open the options twirly thing
    Select show action when run
Change the first pulldown menu to whatever you want the default selection to be (you’ll be able to change it when you use it in the finder)
Now select File – Save as Plug-in
Name it and make sure it is a plug-in for the finder.

Now in the finder select the group of files you want. Right click a select Automator – then your plugin.

Customize your settings and hit continue.

I use this all the time to replace spaces with underscores when posting files (our ftp doesn’t like spaces).

It also comes in very handy when compressor adds extra stuff to the names of compressed files.

Thanks for the respomce. I did exactly what you said but my files now are renamed but all messed up. They are now in a sequence and the name is repeated several times. If I have a .mov extension it gives it a .movv extension. What am I doing wrong?

A manual way to do this is bring all the clips into Final Cut 6.

Name the first one Horses Running 1.

    Copy “Horses Running ”

Go to clip 2, past “Horses Running ” then type 2.

    Etc.

When you are done renaming in Final Cut, select the clips and choose “rename file to match clip” and the files on disk will have their names changes.
