Flip4Mac (the free QuickTime plugin) will allow you to playback some windows based codecs on your mac. With FCP6, you might be able to just use the DV AVI files as is without convert them to something more mac friendly.
As for the MPEG-2 stuff, I’m not familiar with how matrox uses mpeg-2. I don’t like working with MPEG-2 files so I convert them to something more edit friendly using MPEG StreamClip (free app).

What type of set up are you using? Deck, card, source footage, timecode base?

The biggest key to doing this is making sure you don’t leave files behind when transferring from one system to another.
Another challenge is when people are start editing on both systems at the same time. This can be a challenge to know what changes can be made to what project.
When I send a project out for mobile editing, I copy everything I need to the mobile hard drive then on the tower system I put the project in a folder called “MOVED TO DRIVE 15” or whatever.
When bringing it back, make sure you copy everything you need back to the RAID. Then put the media on the mobile drive in a folder called “MOVED TO RAID”
It just helps to keep things organized.

I don’t know the hard fast rule of how it works, but if you’re dragging something and it has a right arrow, you will preform an insert edit (split tracks). If you have a down arrow it will to an overwrite edit.
Usually if you’re cursor is on the lower part of a track, you will have the down arrow (overwrite). If it’s on the upper part, it will be the right arrow (insert).
You can also change from one to another by holding down the option key before you drop it.

zrb123 once shared with me his true identity and I have been mentally scared ever sense. How could someone as helpful on the cow as zrb123 be so…..

But in hopes of protecting the innocent lives of so many who are afraid to divulge their true identities, I will say no more about zrb123 except, “Hi.”
Personally, I have nothing to hide… except for that one experience that forever changed me when I was in the fourth grade and saw someone drop a chicken from an airplane…
I’d better stop now before people figure out how insane I really am.

Do you have the flip4mac plugin installed? This should allow you to import the files to FCP. And with FCP6, you might be able to just edit with those files as they are.
Did you try just changing the extension? Did it work?
Can you open the files in QuickTime?

So you want to stretch it so the SD 4:3 image fills the HD 16:9 frame? Things will look distorted, but if you want to do that:
-Turn wireframe+image on in the canvas window (button just above the image in the canvas window)
-Use your selection tool and select the corner of the image and hold down shift while you scale it to fill the frame. This will allow you to change the aspect ratio as you scale it too.
I hate doing this because it looks funny to stretch the image, but if that’s what you’re going for then go for it.
With out changing the aspect ratio, then you’re dealing with either cropping the top and bottom or leaving black on the sides.

You’re not sharing it over a network right? Just attached to one of your systems?
I might need to expand our SAN in the coming months and I’m starting to look into options.
