  • convert PAL DV AVI to PAL DV MOV quickly?

Posted by Mark Palmos on July 19, 2007 at 10:34 pm

    Hello all,

I have about 400 gigs of PAL DV AVI files I would like to use in FCP. Is there a quick way to change the “wrapper” from AVI to MOV without re-encoding the whole lot? I guess simply changing the file extention would not do it right?

    Thanks,
    Mark.

No you must convert each file. You can do a batch convert, but it will still take time.

thanks z… (i prefer it when people use real names on a forum like this)

I know that with Premier Pro if you change the .vob extention of a DVD file into .mpg, it can be used as a source clip, so it MAY work. Anyone out there with experience of it working or not? Perhaps there is a utility to change the file header since the digital media contained in the file should be identical as it is identical to the info on the DV tape!

    cheers,
    mark.

    And why should it matter.

    hello zrb123

hmmm, ok, this is how i see it…

Having unusual non-human screen names makes it difficult to reply because I would have to look several times to carefully type your screen name correctly.

It seems more personal and polite for people to put their name or signature with name at the end of each post. Im not saying you are not being polite, just that I like to address people by their name (which is the way one usually addresses real people!)

it matters only as much as it would matter in the “real” world. Imagine introducing yourself as %zf*wr34. For me it makes the difference between communicating with a real person and a faceless entity.

no biggie, its just much nicer to know who you are. We are a community after all.

    cathca later Zac?

Do you have the flip4mac plugin installed? This should allow you to import the files to FCP. And with FCP6, you might be able to just edit with those files as they are.

Did you try just changing the extension? Did it work?

Can you open the files in QuickTime?

Yes, it is true. zrb123 is a real person and not just a fictitious apparition whose name is based on a combination of characters and numbers.

zrb123 once shared with me his true identity and I have been mentally scared ever sense. How could someone as helpful on the cow as zrb123 be so…..

    Just joking:)

But in hopes of protecting the innocent lives of so many who are afraid to divulge their true identities, I will say no more about zrb123 except, “Hi.”

Personally, I have nothing to hide… except for that one experience that forever changed me when I was in the fourth grade and saw someone drop a chicken from an airplane…

I’d better stop now before people figure out how insane I really am.

    LOL
well i hope you have seen someone about that! was it at least kentucky fried?

about FLIP4MAC, i actually have not taken possession of my (first ever) mac computer. It arrives next week, in the meantime I have bought suite 2 and am pre-empting all the stuff which will come up.

if i have say 100 clips, some DV, some matrox mpeg2 I-Frame, can i batch convert them with flip4mac? How will flip4mac be different from encoding AVI>MOV?

    thanks mate
