SAS / SATA Array choice
In response to a query below in the thread about the Dulce review….
We’ve decided to go with two, 8TB SAS/SATA Pro AVIO systems from MaxxDigital running off the Atto R380 SAS card. It actually just came to down to speed quite honestly.
In our research over the past two months, we’ve tested the Sonnet Fusion SAS solution, the Dulce featured in Bob’s review and the MaxxDigital. All three of them were outstanding and you can’t go wrong with any of them. All three of them run RAID 5 and we did a torture test on all three of them by popping out a drive during an HD 1920x1080i 10bit capture and all three units did not fail. They simply kept capturing.
However, as of right now, Dulce is the only system that has a working RAID alarm system. So if a drive fails, an audible alarm sounds warning you that there is a problem. Because RAID 5 works so well, you could literally just be editing away not realizing that one drive in the array has failed because that’s what RAID 5 is designed to do.
Atto has promised me that they are working on the issue and will have an alarm system working in the near future.
The Maxx simply had the highest speed of everything we tested along with the best pricing solution as well. It’s still expensive to purchase 16TB in one shot, but compare the cost of MaxxDigital (or Sonnet or Dulce) to say 16TB of Apple’s X-RAID or some of the other fibre channel solutions.
Maxx’s website is maxxdigital.com and they do sell a whole host of storage solutions in addition to their own. Nice folks and we’re looking forward to installing the arrays shortly.

I went to their website and checked under the “Shop” category to
see more info on your purchase. I didnt see the equipment you specified (8TB SAS/SATA Pro AVIO systems from MaxxDigital running off the Atto R380 SAS ca). -

it’s brand spankin’ new, I had the only 8TB unit in the country when I was testing it and one of the only test models out there. You have to call to ask about it or order it. They’re selling it to some pretty heavy hitters out on the West Coast.

You’re not sharing it over a network right? Just attached to one of your systems?
I might need to expand our SAN in the coming months and I’m starting to look into options.

Though I have heard through the grapevine of some folks connecting these through a Gig Ethernet and cutting DVCPro HD on them. Not this particular box, but SAS/SATA in general. I need to look into that further.

That’s not true. Highpoint RocketRAID (the first SATA card for the Mac) has an alarm that goes off it a drive fails or is disconnected.

The Gig-E ones have dual gig-e ports on the back. Not sure quite how that works bit they are alot more expensive, they also have a raid controller on board I recall. Also appears they will serve pc or macs as well.
