Correct me if I’m wrong, but Cloudspace is just cloud storage for your media, similar to Backblaze. It’s not meant to be accessed remotely, but instead protection against failing drives / the office burning down.

  • Yeah the scale up/down just displays my comp by forcing the aspect ratio.

What’d I’m kind of looking for is a way to mimic what I do on screen. If I zoom in, it zooms in on the screen.

Almost like a slightly intelligent screen capture. Flames do something similar.

Its not exactly the solution I was hoping for, but it does resolve one small part of my problem. Thanks for the answer though.

I did find switching to the Ripple Edit Tool helped prevent me from clearing my trim selection. So that’s substantially better.

Would love to hear from anyone else who’s come from Avid and how they deal with the trim tool.

  • I actually figured it out using topographical project mapping and compositing in bushes to simulate some additional depth.

you can use anything you want, agreed. if you’re working alone, doing your own stuff, you could use CHAINSAWLINX and get good results.

The reason FCPX was universally panned was because it didn’t fit into anyone’s pipeline when it was initially released. It was the follow up to their democratizing and Avid-killing editing software, so there were some high expectations.

Problem was, it didn’t fit into anyone’s pipelines. It couldn’t be part of any pipeline, actually. FCPX didn’t include AAFs, EDLs, OMFs, all of the required tools to integrate into other houses’ workflows. Eventually they started adding these features, but by then it was already a PR nightmare.

Professionals split tasks up. Sound, color, editing, effects, cleanup, finishing, etc. We do this not because we’re lazy, but because if we did everything ourselves, we would A) not be stellar at any single thing and B) be spending more time on a single project instead of moving onto the next thing and really honing our craft. I’d personally rather be editing more stuff than having to deal with mixing/coloring/onlining and dealing with client notes every step of the way.

To add insult to injury, there was also a steep learning curve for people coming from other NLEs. IMO this wouldn’t have been a problem (Apple has some serious fanpeople in entertainment). I think they’d have been willing to learn it and push through, had the system actually be able to be used professionally.

  • I specifically meant making Resolve faster. Was curious if there was any thunderbolt breakouts or anything to distribute the load. Looks like nothing like that exists, unless I create linux clusters with the paid version.

wow, that was so incredibly random. I’ve been up all night trying to figure out a workaround to this problem. What a coincidence. I haven’t had to think about it in months.

I was entertaining the idea of using Resolve as an intermediate. So
    Raw –> Resolve –> MXF –> Avid.
    then
Avid –> Resolve –> New AAF –> Premiere.

Haven’t tried it yet, though. Going to run more tests in the morning.

How embarrassing, this is still broken.

One thing I do in these scenarios is I use merged ALE lists in Avid.

You still have to do a LOT manually to get the media over. But depending on the complexity of the breakdown and detail in the columns/headers, you can actually automate a few things.

This is only helpful if you have a lot of media.

I import all of the media. Then I export an ALE of the bin, so I have a tab-delimited text file. You can import that into excel (or stay in textedit). Then, get the XML parsed out to excel (I bet there’s software out there for that). Then you can copy and paste the column data. As long as everything is sorted by TC (and you don’t have any dupes) or by reelname, you can blast through the re-breakdown process.

Then, when you’re done with it, you can Import that ALE into the bin again, but in the settings, choose MERGE LIST.

Saves me from getting carpal tunnel early!
