Apart from going all-in and putting your NEXIS online using AVID’s cloudspace feature, has anyone had any luck using cloud platforms for collaborative remote editing between 4+ editors?

Our reluctance into partitioning part of our NEXIS for cloud usage is more about security than anything – parsing out something that is LAN to our entire shared storage infrastructure is unnerving – but maybe that’s just me?

I have looked at 3rd party solutions to solve for Avid bin locking before – things like the software Mimiq used in tandem with a run of the mill NAS (like a QNAP or Synology) – but that’s always felt pretty sketchy to me.

I now see cloud services like LucidLink boasting their use of Mimiq to offer cloud editing for AVID users – I still just don’t know how comfortable I would be counting on something like that.

Has anyone used the AVID supported Cloudspace solution and can report back on its performance? Adversely has anyone had experience using alternative cloud solutions for collaborative AVID workflows (circa LucidLink)?

In either case – are the platforms intuitive to use and troubleshoot? How dependent is it on the local client’s download/upload speed (min requirements?)? How prominent are standard performance issues, i.e. dropped frames, crashing, errors?

While I can’t speak to the cloud aspect, as its just too expensive for my needs.

I can say I have successfully been using Mimiq with a Qnap setup between two Avids in my studio for over 2 years now. The only issues i had was at the start when I was going between a Mac and a Windows box, running different versions of Avid…and yes I was told not to expect that to be perfect.

I’ve switched my second box over to Windows, and when I needed that support station to be an assist station working on the same show I’m on, I turned off my 2018 dongle and did a few months of subscription, so it was as up to date as my current box…worked perfectly.

In other times, i simply let it run with older software, and if I do happen to load up a project that is open on my other box, it seems to be fine for the short run i’m doing. (Outputting or something like that) Mimiq isn’t “sketchy” in my experience.

Give it a trial. Alex at Indistor has been great to deal with.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Cloudspace is just cloud storage for your media, similar to Backblaze. It’s not meant to be accessed remotely, but instead protection against failing drives / the office burning down.

There are companies that do your editing footage and software licenses all in the cloud. The idea being, instead of buying a new computer every few years, you can use their array of computers, get kick ass speed, fast storage, and the latest software for 150 to 200 a month.

If you spend 5 to 10 grand on a computer that lasts 4 years…the price seems reasonable.

You just need a basic computer to link up to their service. Plus, when you render your outputs, you are drawing on a mass array of boxes. And then, when you want to send to the client…you are using their super high speed internet for that transmission as well.

The storage options are pretty pricey however….as is most cloud storage over a few hundred gigs.
