Interesting, so the issue might be with Premiere’s interpretation.
All DNX media was connecting fine. Just not AMA.

I’ve been diving in head-first on my laptop and home machine. A short film and a music video. Seemed like the appropriate test subjects.
I’ve been trying to note some small, irritating bugs through the process. So far, I’ve noticed:
• SHIFT-UP or SHIFT-DOWN doesn’t select to the left or right when renaming a clip as it used to do. That’s been killing me for breakdowns.
• SHIFT-DRAG SELECT of tracks doesn’t seem to work occasionally. Like, holding down shift and sliding across a bunch of tracks to select/deselect. Feels like its getting stuck, then starts working after the 3rd or 5th attempt.
• Strange auto-patching issues in timeline. I open a new clip, and everything is patched incorrectly.
• New Project window seems to have a refresh issues, erasing the project name doesn’t work, but you can type under it. Ghosting-kinda thing.
• On my laptop, that has 8gb of RAM and a 2.66 i7, it takes forever to boot up. And not in a modern, “That took, like, 1 whole minute!” It took somewhere between 8-10 minutes to boot up. And then when I export for the first time after a restart, it takes another solid 5 minutes to open the export dialog. My guess is this has something to do with calling the background rendering system, and could be resolved by just turning it off. I also noticed that minimum requirement now is 8gb RAM. 16gb reco.••• NOTE: I am enjoying v7 heavily. The waveform and thumbnail (frame view) caching is, like, god’s gift to me.

Andrew, I agree with you on almost all of that. The only difference is I believe being in LA is more beneficial to one’s entertainment career. By staying in Boston or NY or where ever you choose, you’ll build a network there. Your contacts are almost always more important than your skill set when you’re job hunting (unfortunately). You’ll keep jobs by being talented, but you’ll get jobs through social and business contacts. My advice would be to live in the city where the jobs are. Or work your ass if in the city you want to make your life in.
If your goal was to just make a movie, I’d say stay where you are and make a movie. That’s easy. But you’re looking to build a career in assisting or editing, so go where the jobs are. I moved to LA and haven’t regretted it yet.

Freelancing will give you the widest range of possibilities for types of projects (long form narrative, short films, and commercials). The downside is you’re paving your own way. It can be tough without a network already in place, and there’s no “promotions” except the ones you give yourself.
If you go the staffed assistant editor route, you may start out lower on the ladder than you want, but you’ll get the opportunity to work on projects you wouldn’t have access to otherwise (depending on the post house you get into).
I moved here from New Jersey and worked in commercials and documentaries for 6 years before going freelance. I would have most likely failed financially without the great people I met as a staffed assist. They kept me afloat so I could take opportunities on independent features and short films. I love being freelance, but I don’t think I would have been able to do it without having done the staffed work.
A lot of the commercial post production, coloring, and VFX scene resides in Santa Monica. You’ll probably want to search around there. In my experience, the editorials there are doing the best high-end national work.

Jennifer, you’re right. Avid will make NEW media if you retranscode through the AMA route. So the MXF will be unique for each transcode. My understanding is it will not index and reconnect automatically. But if you choose to retranscode with AMA, you’ll be able to RELINK to the new MXF media, assuming the Source File heading is preserved.
You can also Batch Import the offline media instead of AMAing it and this will circumvent having to Relink. But it takes a bit longer. Surprisingly longer. (….so much longer…)

Are you looking for the answer to a technical question or best practice?
If I’m reading that right, it sounds like you just have a lot of grunt work to do. To combine the projects you just need to collect the bins into one project and start parsing though it.

Definitely agree with Shane.
I started in Premiere and used it for 6 years through high school and college, switched to FCP for 4 years, and then spent the last 6 in Avid. Avid is by far the most stable, cleanest, “adult” NLE. For silly, short, fast turnaround projects I still use FCP (phasing into Premiere… CUDA is amazing). If its under 2 days and has a bunch of random assets, it’s FCP or Premiere. It it’s longer, has video, and (most important) clients in the room, Avid is the only way to go.
I can’t understand why folks want to organize a project bin structure AND a folder structure. It just gets overwhelming, duped filenames always come up (even with the most organized people). It’s just too dangerous.
If I’m forced to work in FCP or Premiere for larger/longer projects, I usually pile all of the media in one folder, Avid style. FCP is abysmal when it comes to keeping track of its own media (especially with more than one editor), and I’ve found this method prevents duped filenames indefinitely.
But yeah, as someone who grew up in the Premiere/FCP world and converted to Avid, I’m here to say its a far superior product. And you can’t beat Avid’s frame mode 🙂

Hmm, didn’t realize that was hardware specific. Makes sense though. I’ve only used dealt with AJA products, and the Konas and IO Expresses both must have that capability.

There is an answer to this!
You need to crossconvert playback to 59.94 in Video Output. The Video Output option is in the Settings tab. I don’t have a machine next to me right now that has external monitoring.
I THINK that’s where it is… v6.5 disables the video output option if you don’t have hardware to monitor so I can’t double check. Can anyone confirm that?
