[Jerry Hofmann] “In case you haven’t caught my drift: I Don’t like HDV.”
Its great for weddings though. LOL
Seriously, its nice to look at…DV on steroids, but definitely not HD.
I never embraced it as a serious production format. I’m quicker to recommend and shoot DVCPRO50.Ron

[Walter Biscardi] “All the majors are now broadcasting prime time and sports in HD. Obviously Discovery continues to lead the way on cable, but even the local Braves Vision (or whatever they call it) here in Atlanta is full HD. We’re picking up a new plasma shortly as the Panasonic 50” professional has dropped from $6k to $3k. “
Yeah…here in NYC that seems to be the case. Local news and most programming is still SD. I think NBC is still BetaSP and DVCPRO (non-primetime stuff). I know for a fact that their cable news is BetaSP 😉 but the transition will be taking place soon. I agree with you, 2006 will be a big year for HD…maybe then I’ll think about a HD monitor.
For production use though, maybe sooner. Those Panny’s are looking nice!Nice job on Good Eats, BTW…. I saw an episode the other day.

I cut a voting spot last year for the elections… Shot in HD, edited in HD, and mastered to HD. But I am pretty sure it aired in SD (digibeta).
This was full uncompressed HDCAM 1080i. Seems like a waste, but at least it looked good. It was cut on FCP with an AJA card.I guess this is why I haven’t purchased a high def monitor for the house. A LOT of networks are still not broadcasting in HD. I’ll continue to wait and by then the price on a good HD monitor will be as cheap as SD monitors.

I’ll second that. The Mackie plays very well with FCP…and mixing shows is SO much easier with it. I’m glad I didn’t spend the money on a shuttle pro. Mackie’s transport controls are great.
I just wish Apple would open up more functionality with the MCU…plug in parameter control, etc. Hopefully in future updates. -
[David Battistella] “INPUT HD AND DOWNCONVERT to SD———–onthe fly—-NO”
Actually…Kona LH does down convert!!
From the website:
10-bit Hardware HD to SD DownconversionI own the LH and have been able to do this. Coming from a Cinewave, this was an important feature. And I believe other than the upconvert and Dual Link, the Kona LH mirrors all other features of the Kona2.
All the specs are on the AJA website.

Thanks Walter
I’ll give that a try. I haven’t seen the “effect box” since my last reboot 24hours ago. But FCP now chokes on yellow bar RT effects. Green bars play ok. I’m not in the office now, but I’ll trash later and see what happens.Do you see any choking with yellow bar RT effects?– and by choke, I mean the typical RT error message comes up.

[Oliver Peters] “Unfortunately the reality is that the entire Mac and PC platfrom situation will be unstable and unpredictable for the next 2 to 3 years”
Exactly what I was thinking. While the new Macs look impressive, and PCIe is the future, Apple still has an Intel transition to go through. If I remember the press release, the first machines will be out by the end of this year, and by ’06 more Macs will follow. I just bought the Kona LH a few weeks ago. It’s still the best $1500 I spent. New Mac, New Cards, Kona LHe, etc… would have been 10X more than I planned on spending anyway– coming from a Cinewave.
I would wait if I had the choice now. You will be further pissed off when Mac intros more machines during Christmas…which WE ALL KNOW is the norm for Apple.

Every edit suite should have a mixer. I have the Mackie 1402… Anything and everything audio related goes through my Mackie. Using the variety of routing options you can input and send audio to almost any device in your suite…and still listen to the Family Guy without intefering with work. And the PiP option on the Dell2001 20″ monitor makes for great viewing while rendering.

[gary adcock] “Well if that happens {within the next 30 days} you are in luck.
AJA will take any product back in that time period.”That gives me a little over a week…. come on Steve…you can do it!
