up converting with a Kona LH
Posted by Francois Xavier on November 2, 2005 at 8:23 amon the edge of ordering but something still not clear
Documentation says you won’t “up-convert” with a Kona LH ( like you would with a Kona 2), but I have read stories of people up-converting their finished looked timeline in Fcp from Hdv or Dvc HD Pro to-> HD 10 Bits with an LH inside
so what is it you can’t “up-convert” : just footage at capture ?

November 2, 2005 at 12:15 pmthat is a cross convert and the LH works great with cross converting analog or digital sources to your choice of quicktime formats such as uncompressed 8 & 10 bit, DVCPRO HD, etc…. upconvert is SD to HD.

The LH does not offer SD to HD Upconvert. You can capture SD footage at 8 or 10bit or you can capture HD footage at 8 or 10bit, but you cannot run an SD signal into the LH and have it up-convert that signal to HD.
Only the Kona 2 can take the SD signal and upconvert it to either 1080i or 720p HD.

November 2, 2005 at 4:04 pmHi Francois
With all the HD talk, it does get a little confusing. HDV is based on MPEG2 compression and currently the HDV is “defined” by JVC and Sony. JVC uses the 1280×720 progressive where as the Sony uses 1440×1080 interlaced with I belive a GOP of 6 and 15 with data rate of 19 and 25 mb/s respectively. The “true” HD frame is 1920×1080. DVCProHD uses 1280×720.
So if you like to go to the HD frame rate of 1920, then yes, upconvert would be the answer (others please add or clarify if I a missing something as I have not worked with the DVCProHD codec extensively). To upconvert, Kona2 is an excellent perhaps the best choice. You will be very happy. DVCProHD codec itself is quite excellent from what I have seen and many people are using as codec of their choice for many projects. Also, please have a listen to Cowpodcast #2 I think, there is an excellent talk and explanation with Frank & Tim on HDV.Hope it helps

Jas –
These is not ONE “true” HD format, there are 14 ATSC specs listed for HD broadcast and they do not even include the older 1920×1035 analog HD format version nor any of the digtal versions from Viper, genisis or other digital capture methods that can be considered HD.The frame size recorded on Sony HDcam is 1440×108, the DVCproHD compressed format for 720p is 960×720 — DVCPROHD is a compression format that also conforms to the 1080 world. All “in Camera” Tape formats do this horizontal squeeze with HD material so they they can get as much info on the smallest possible tape area (and no this does not include HDCam SR– there is not currently a camera that uses has SR as a tape format)

Thanks for the clarification. You always learn from here. But what I meant by true format was that 1920×1080 is prob. the most commonly used format in both theory and practical world. Hence most people refer to HD’s frame rate to a maximum of this one. Am I correct? You most definitely have a lot more HD experience than I do and I love learning new stuff from fellows like yourself. As for the 720>1080, how does 1280×720 on the JVC and 1440 on the Sony “cross convert” to 1920×1080. Isn’t that upconvert. I am definitely missing something here. Could you please clarify or point me to any papers/docs on this.
