November 3, 2005 at 2:27 am[uncompressed] “YES, the KONA LH can cross convert HD. whatever the other guy is trying to say, i really don’t know what the exercise was all about.”
No it can’t. Cross Convert is to input 720p material to the Kona LH and have the board capture the footage as 1080i, or vice versa. The Kona LH cannot do this, nor can the Kona 2 do this.
The Kona LH also cannot Up-Convert SD to HD.

and… hum, so the Kona LH can finally provide it ?”
No, none of the Kona cards can provide a Cross Convert.

November 3, 2005 at 7:47 amBottom line (I hope)
so “up-converting” a finished looked TIMELINE in FCP from HDV or DVC HD Pro to-> full HD 10 Bits is possible ? but only “software inside codec working ” based ? ? ?
The fact is: I live in a SD PAL world (so far) / my work is delivered in digibeta for television
So, if I have an HDV (God protect me !) or an DVC PRO HD (I prefer that) “rushes/based” project (an final timeline) will I be better off :
– to live it DVC HD PRO for color grade, title & graphics
– to convert that timeline in uncompressed 10 bits SD Codec (sofware based) as soon as I can for color grade, title & graphics and then regular SDI out ?
– to attach a stone at the end of a short rope, close the other end around my neck and jump into the Seine river ?Documentary Director & Editor

November 3, 2005 at 2:55 pm[Jas L.] “But what I meant by true format was that 1920×1080 is prob. the most commonly used format in both theory and practical world.”
Not in my world, not in the US. Possibly on the west coast, but outside of LA- Varicam outsell HDcam units at about 7-1. The world that walter and I live in is capture at 720p deliver 1080.
[Jas L.] “how does 1280×720 on the JVC and 1440 on the Sony “cross convert” to 1920×1080. Isn’t that upconvert. I am definitely missing something here. “
the JVC HDV camera is 720p it does not shoot 1080,
1440 x1080 is the native frame size on HDCAM tape it plays out at 1920×1080HDV was developed as a consumer format – DVCPROHD and HDCAM are professional mastering tape formats –

November 3, 2005 at 4:37 pmNo, no. No river jumping needed unless you prefer the thrill.
I think what you are getting at here Francios, is that you can lay off an HDV or DVCPro HD project out of the Kona to HD tape through the HD-SDI and you can also downconvert the HDV or DVCPro HD out of regular SDI to digibeta in hardware and in real time (no software conversion). IT won’t be at 10-bit quality unless you digitize in 10 bit quality. You’ll need some sort of d/a converter if digitizing some forms of HDV. DVCPro HD is a compressed 8 Bit format. If you want to use 10 bit for grading and effects, you’ll need to digitize all of your footage in 10 bit and output to HD or SD. The Kona 2 can help you do all of these things. It does NOT magically convert your HDV footage into 10 bit uncompressed.

November 4, 2005 at 6:52 pmWOW!
What a thread!
Here is a simple list:
KONA 2
INPUT SD AND UPCONVERT TO HD ————onthe fly—–YES
INPUT HD AND DOWNCONVERT to SD————onthe fly—-YES
INPUT HD 720 and CROSS CONVERT TO 1080—–onthe fly—-NO
INPUT HD 1080 and CROSS CONVERT 10 720—- onthe fly—-NOKONA LH
INPUT SD AND UPCONVERT TO HD ————onthe fly—–NO
INPUT HD AND DOWNCONVERT to SD———–onthe fly—-NO
INPUT HD 720 and CROSS CONVERT TO 1080—–onthe fly—-NO
INPUT HD 1080 and CROSS CONVERT 10 720—- -onthe fly—-NOFINAL CUT PRO (TRANSCODING ONCE CAPUTRED)
INPUT SD AND UPCONVERT TO HD ————onthe fly—–NO——-RENDER UPCONVERT IN FCP TIMELINE——YES
INPUT HD AND DOWNCONVERT to SD————onthe fly—-YES——RENDER DOWNCONVERT IN FCP TIMELINE—-YES
INPUT HD 720 and CROSS CONVERT TO 1080—–onthe fly—-NO——-RENDER IN FCP TIMELINE—-YES
INPUT HD 1080 and CROSS CONVERT 10 720—- onthe fly—-NO——–RENDER IN FCP TIMELINE—-YESI do not mean to confuse things further by the last section here, but it is possible from within FCP to use a software up-down or cross convert. This does require rendereing and is does not offer these features in real time. This is the great thing about the KONA 2 it does the upand downconvert with built in hardware.

DAVID
I like your tab, but…
If you compare with Jeremy, Gary & Walter useful contributions some LH (therefore Kona 2) converting on the fly ability is MISSING.On the last section instead of:
“FINAL CUT PRO (TRANSCODING ONCE CAPTURED)”
should we read :
“FINAL CUT PRO (TRANSCODING ONCE CAPTURED) WITH KONA ON BOARD” ?Documentary Director & Editor
