set your type, make a copy of the type layer and convert the copy to outlines (command+shift+O on a mac). then apply the gradient to the outline version of the type. if you need to edit the type, the copy allows you to go back to the original font and make changes.

maybe try exporting the pallette swatches when you make the trace. there should be just the 2 used colors swatches of black and white. double clik the black swatch and change it globally to white and globally change the white to black.

  • try “glow” effect in multiply mode. adjust the threshold. the darks will bloom.

also no relation to steadycam here but i highly recommend it for the kind of cam moves you want to do. it’s brilliant, really useful in complex smooth moves and multi-cam switching. well worth investigating. good tutorials and support also.

don’t think you can change artboard color (in cs3 anyway) so usually i create a separate layer, then create a rectangle that is the size/color of the colored background you want (14×48), position it with the artboard edges and then lock it in the layers panel so it doesn’t select everytime you touch it. build your other layers on top of that.

hey nolan, thanks for that useful info and taking the time to make a movie demo. with that technique what controls the speed of the shader morph? just the time difference between the shader keyframes?

i don’t think you’ll see an individual action file for that. it’s part of the file in the pshop actions folder called “Video Actions.atn”. look at the ACTIONS menu under WINDOW in pshop. you should see the “alpha from visible layer command” under the list of actions in the video actions menu. if for some reason you don’t have it you can always create and record your own video actions.

  • the first group seem to me to be done in a true 3D program. the italian portraits with vector overlays are almost certainly some combination of photoshop blending modes, illustrator and great artistic skill.

before you paste i think you might have to make sure that you have the text tool and a text layer selected. it does work.
