it seems like an obvious useful thing but i don’t think it’s there. i ended up recording a couple of simple actions/commands to just step forward one and back one frame and assigned it to F3 & F4 keys so i can easily just toggle fore/back 1 frame with my left hand and roto w/the right. it works fine and photoshop is actually quite good for that kind of manual task.

sounds like you should stick with corel draw.

maybe try the action under video actions called “alpha channel from visible layer”. this might work for what you need, but you need to turn off any layers you don’t want alpha for. you could also create a new action and assign an open F-key command. start recording, command click the layer menu with the artwork you need the alpha for, then select “save selection as channel” and stop recording. when you hit the F-key it should create a new alpha channel from whatever layer you have selected instead of the just the visible layer.

did you try using the “divide” command in the illustrator pathfinder tab? select your vert lines and your elipse, then “divide” in the pathfinder. this will give you the vert lines plus the elipse, minus the vert lines outside the elipse. if you don’t want the exterior or border elipse then manually delete the curved elipse pieces with the direct selection tool.

either search for or take a look at the “PATHFINDER” window. there is a shape mode called “subtract”. select the overlapping shapes and subtract the circle from the rest.

take a look at eurostile bold. looks pretty close.

i think the implementation is a bit funky but vid safe lines are a kind of crop in illustrator. when you select the crop tool the options will show up on the top menu bar and the ability to turn various components of the tv safe display on/off. you can also double klik the crop tool to see various display options for which lines of the tv safe display. selecting crop “make or release” allows you to delete them.

up to now i have always built graphics for D1 in photoshop using a square pixel 720×540 layout and then let premier scale it to 720×486 non-square. you can also build your pshop graphics at 720×540 square and then save a second version that you non-proportionally change to 720×486 and import that into premier. it adds a second step/version of each picture but works fine.
i’ve recently seen some info about the new pixel aspect ratio that CS4 uses which is apparently .91 rather than .9, which means a square pixel comp D1 should be 720×534. here’s a tutorial that talks about it:

rather than using an action from photoshop maybe take a look at bridge under tools. you can send a folder of p-shop pictures from bridge to illustrator trace. as i recall you need to have the trace illustrator settings and color pallette all saved in illustrator but bridge will automate the routine and save the illustrator traced files to a new folder. i’ve used this to trace/treat several hundred picts from a pict movie sequence. you can also do the same thing with photoshop files in bridge to automate photoshop actions on a folder of pictures.
