As always, that’s really helpful Adam. Thanks for that. One question, when I open that scene in c4d R10 with mograph it works but the volume effector is missing. Is the volume effector part of a later version of mograph or some other plug-in I am missing?

it’s not exactly clear from your post if you actually need a separate alpha for another compositing step external to AFX. if you don’t or can do the composite all in AFX try just rendering the flare on it’s own black solid/layer, then change the color mode of that layer to add or screen. in AFX the black drops out and only the flare FX will show over the layers beneath it. no alpha for the flare shape (which Umult gets you) but the composite in AFX will be fine.

F1-F5 works to change views on my mac, always has. maybe check your mac system preferences/keyboard&mouse and look at the “keyboard shortcuts” tab. you might have a system shortcut assignment that is interfering with the C4d F1-F5 keyboard shortcuts.

May 2, 2009 at 5:51 pm in reply to: is AE capable of rendering single-frame high-quality stills for prints?your plan should work fine. i use AFX for print work all the time and for the same reasons. your comp for 11×17 inches@300dpi would be 3300×5100 with square pixels. they’re big but AFX is perfectly capable of dealing with artwork and comps this size. speed of handing will depend on your machine/ram, etc. but you can work at 1/4 screen size and you can render out at the full rez as tiff, pict, or even as photoshop layers if you want to keep everything separate and want to go back into pshop for some reason.

1) What is the best format to export out of FCP for Illustrator?
– pict, psd, tiffs or jpeg best quality sequence should all work. i use jpegs. you probably don’t neeed 30 fps. i frequently use as few as 4-6 fps and apply afx frame blending when you play back the processed sequence.2) What is the best way to apply the SAME effect to all files in the image sequence?
– do a first trace manually, export/save the trace pallette/swatches and settings you want to use from illustrator.3) Am I basically asking how to BATCH PROCESS?
– use adobe BRIDGE. upen the folder in bridge that you exported the FCP sequence of stills from, select all the stills, go to TOOLS>illustrator>live trace, choose the trace preset you made and the destination size/location etc. export in any of the formats you imported. you should end up with another sequence of processed stills that you can re-import to FCP and edit or adjust playback speed there. -
under object/live trace/trace options, on the left side of the trace options tab there is a check box to export swatches. after you do the trace, double klik the black swatch it exported and globally change its color to what you want.
