@Matt – let’s get back to our regular programming. This is an inclusive world and CreativeCOW thrives on its ‘worldliness’ – hence its acronymic suffix.

Seriously, linguistic abilities are the furthest from my thoughts when it comes to communicating, which is largely visual, with AE.

    Cheers

  • Hi Joseph, apologies if I wasn’t sufficiently clear but the Timeline is auto-scrolled such that the selected layer(s) – the Timeline’s layer hierarchy isn’t affected.

  • You can use the “x” key to view the currently selected layer(s) at the top of the Timeline stack.

  • There’s some info here – https://myleniumerrors.com/2008/12/13/78-6/

I would look at pre-rendering the lower level pre-comp and look at ways to reduce RAM. This isn’t part of the info in the link above but IT could be memory related.

  • Look at using mocha for your rotoscoping tasks. mocha is exceptional for tracking-assisted rotoscoping tasks.

Further, there seems to be an issue with terminology – rotoscoping also means masking if you’re masking to create articulated mattes.

  • Here’s another mocha tutorial on tracking with foreground occlusion – https://vimeo.com/8057500

With respect to tracking screens, 99% of tracking issues has to do with footage that have been acquired with proper visual effects supervision. There is almost always a way to shoot the screens to allow for a fluid tracking process in post.

Go ahead and make it a 3D layer. There’s too much BS about not making layers with 3rd party 3D plugins 3D layers. The only time you shouldn’t do this is if it interferes with AE’s 3D interactions and the results are not to your liking. IOW, just do it and see if things mess up. Oftentimes, you can get away with it.

Use a Shape Layer to create the spline/path. Ensure to switch off the Fill property for the Shape Layer. Apply the Gradient Stroke Shape Operator.

The Gradient Stroke’s start and end points can be observed in the Comp Panel as a dashed line with two dots on either end. Move the start and end points accordingly. Set the gradient’s start and end color to taste.

Try linking the three group of rectangles via Expressions, as per your initial setup. Parenting only works with Transform Properties (except Opacity) AND does not trickle down to the innards of Shape Layers, Text Layers or effects.
