The best thing you could do is render them out uncompressed. That way they’ll have the best quality you’re going to get. The problem is that this makes for big files. The next choice might be the Sony YUV format which is 4:2:2 and should hold up pretty well.
The last thing you want to do is go back to DV25, especially if you’ve added text or graphics to these clips. DV25 will tear up the edges of these. So don’t store the renders on a DV tape.
If disk space is an issue and the renders are small enough to fit on a data DVD (which is any writable DVD) you could store the AVI files there.

Vegas is very simple compared to M100. Basically you just need to move the media files and project files. If they’re on a 1394 drive then the relative paths should stay the same and you’re set. As has already been said, the bins and subclips are just a “by reference” feature contained within the project file.
Look through the prefs, there might be a few other folders that should have been put onto that 1394 drive.

If size weren’t an issue you’d output an uncompressed AVI file. However, I’m sure that size will be an issue if you hand them a 300GB render. (just making that number up, btw).
I think you can safely go back to them and ask them for their delivery requirements. Tell them you don’t know what they mean by a DB2 format. In fact, respond to their email where they asked for a DB2, so they can see that they asked for it.

If you do a google search the most common thing that comes up is IBM’s database format. Evidently there is a video extension for it and that extension will handle several file types.

Well, the best you can get would be to capture as DV (cause that’s what you’ve got) and then render direct from the timeline to MPEG2. This way there’s no rencoding as DV (in your transitions, for instance). This should be about the same as rendering as uncompressed and then rendering to mpeg2. The difference here is that you don’t get an actual uncompressed AVI file on your hard drive, and you skip a step.
There might be an advantage to having the rendered uncompressed master if you need to go back and add titles or something, but I think you could do without it.

No one here can answer it and putting an all-caps “Period” in the question seems like he’s just trying to use force. Pissing into the wind, really, because no amount of force will get the question answered, and certainly not in a user forum.
Jason should do something productive. Go to the Sony site and make a product suggestion. That’s what I just did.

December 15, 2005 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Will Sony ever improve Vegas so that it does not lose its prerenders? PERIOD.It seems to me that some of the problem is in the perception of what prerenders do. They aren’t prerenders of things on the timeline, they’re prerenders of the timeline as a whole.
As an example, if I apply mediaFX to a clip and then do a prerender, it’s not the clip that was rerendered, it’s the timeline. So if I overlap another clip with this one then the prerender is no longer valid.
I’d suggest two things for Vegas:
1. ability to prerender individual clips on the timeline. Change the tint of a prerendered clip
2. A visible “Prerender Track” at the top of the timeline – say about 5 PX high. Have it respond to ripple edits just like everything else, but not make it directly editable.The reason to display prerenders like this is to make it more apparent what is going on with the prerenders and why they do and do not presist. I think that viewing the prerenders like this would be more instructive to users and suggest new ways of dealing with prerenders to the programmers.

Mine has worked fine in 4, 5, and 6. No troubles aside from a few puffs of smoke.

I don’t know if that codec is a standard for animation or not. That’s just it’s name. I assume there are other codecs available that are compressed but add alpha, I just don’t know what they are.
When you think about it, a lossy codec would smudge up your transparent areas, so you’d want to use a codec that was as nearly lossless as possible. That’s why the uncompressed AVI codec has alpha but the Sony YUV codecc doesn’t.

Yeah, EDL is a total headache since it was never designed to convey much info, and generally just an A/B track. If you have to provide EDL then you should work on the system they need.
Another possibility might be to move your finished project from Vegas to one of the others just to produce the EDL. But that seems like asking for trouble.
