Do you have either of these two applications installed on your laptop? Is it possible that you’ve installed software from these applications that is causing this?
You say these are AVI files. I’m assuming that they all use the same codec, right?
Is this only happening on the external drive?
This isn’t normal behavior for a dv avi file created by Vegas. But then, you haven’t said that these were DV avi files.

This is not good. Is there any other way to set up a render queue for Premiere projects? Can Cleaner do it, or is Premiere scriptable in any way?

We were just discussing this sort of thing on the Vegas forum. A user tried turning HT off and, while he got higher CPU usage, it doesn’t seem like it improved his playback performance.

Well, actually, I have my system disc in an array but it’s mirrored. Yes, I don’t like the idea of drive failure.
A controller card can make a big difference but the cheaper ones don’t take any load off the CPU so it’s best to do a bit of research before chosing a card.

In fact, the first time in my memory that we did render tests, spot turned in the best time with a system using SCSI discs. A very similar system with ATA discs was a little slower.
SCSI is costly but you can now get external arrays that are scsi on the outside and SATA on the inside. They’re a bit cheaper.

Could this be an issue with HT? Perhaps you should try turning it off in BIOS and then trying it again?
I don’t actually know if this is an issue but suspect it might be.

If your application currently needs data faster than the drives can deliver then a striped array may help. This will come into play when using SD uncompressed, possibly SD 4:2:2 or many HD formats. Not HDV, though. HDV only requires as much throughput as DV25. Cineform intermediaries require more though.
Most low end RAID puts a little extra load on the CPU – which will actually slow your renders a smidge! Another option is to use 10k RPM Raptor drives. I saw a recent test illustrating that these can actually rival a 2 disc striped array.
Watch your task manager. If you have reduced playback framerates but your CPU isn’t being taxed then maybe you have a disk throughput problem. If the CPU is running full out then a faster CPU is going to be much more effective than faster discs.

Very true. There’s very little reason or advantage to porting Vegas to Mac. If Apple ever gets their market share up above Microsoft’s then it might be a different story.
Vegas uses a lot of Windows plumbing to work. A Mac port would be a major undertaking for very little return. However, given that Apple has repeated screwed hardware NLE vendors in the past, maybe a software NLE has more of a chance surviving on a Mac OS.
To my mind, wishing for a Mac port of Vegas is just fidgety. Settle down and get to work.

Sticking with what you know is always easiest but you’re in a spot right now where you might consider waiting for the Intel Macs. That could take a year but the thing is that you’ll be in an upgrade dead end if you stick with the lowly dual G5.
The Intel system you have now will work for Vegas for a while yet. If you wanted to upgrade then the main thing to throw at it is CPU power. Dual core Athlon64s are the prefered CPU for Vegas these days. Dual Opterons with dual cores are the ideal solution.
There’s really nothing else you need yet. There’s no special hardware for Vegas, no special graphics cards either. Fast CPU, Gig of ram or better, and storage space. The 10,000 RPM Raptor drives are supposed to be pretty good and give 2-disk arrays a run for their money.
I say “yet” because we all kind of hope that another rev of Vegas will be released at NAB. While I don’t really expect any special hardware support for V7 I’m also not privy to any information. Who knows? Maybe there’s good reason to hold onto your upgrade money until then.
Or then again maybe there’s good reason to hold onto your cash until the Intel rev of FCP.
