[Oliver Peters] “That’s an inherently closed system.”
??
How is it “closed”? It’s even less closed than e.g. creating simple disk images. A simple right-click on the Mac and you have full access to its contents and under windows it shows up as a regular folder. Best part (for me), too, is that if favorited you have quick and immediate access to it as the source via the import window (as if it were the original) should you need to use “Reimport from Camera/Card”.And I’m not saying the app is useless per se, I just don’t see myself spending money on redundant functionality that FCP already has. And if I needed additional/other checksummed camera media backups, I could get that for free with Resolve 11 for example. Or get Shotput Pro or Auto Transfer from Digital Rebellion and get added automation and oodles of other functionality, even if they are more expensive. Great app I’m sure, just saying there are alternatives and have been for a while.
But the biggest irony of course being that if this kind of functionality didn’t exist already in FCP, but elsewhere (i.e. the other way around) the pundits would be all over it with the usual “I have to buy a bunch of extra stuff!” meme. But this way, anything additional that is in fact redundant is of course suddenly redundantly BETTER. 😀 It’s hilarious.
Whatever. To each his own, right? 😉

Not too sure how *FCP* users actually need this, seeing that they can make camera archives from within FCP and “capture” from the archive. Boom, you already have two copies.
And if you, like me, have a Time Machine backup of the disk holding the archives you even have three.
Superb promo either way.

No. You’d simply put whichever generator you like into an empty project and choose “Publish as Generator”. After that it’s available in FCP.
Anything beyond that would best be left up to Mark to explain to you: https://www.rippletraining.com/categories/apple-pro-apps-tutorials/motion-5-tutorials.html

Hmmmm… maybe a gradient generator? Otherwise check out the backgrounds in Motion. Lots of cheese there.

😀 How exactly could one degrade HDV any further?? Even higher data-rate H.264 is better. 😉
No, but seriously folks… if size isn’t a big deal, why not simply transcode to ProRes? Even LT should be more than enough. And if I’m not mistaken, READING ProRes is standard even with QT for Windows.

Actually, not silly at all, no. Seeing that as of v10 iMovie is literally a miniature version of FCP X, meaning it also uses the same Motion file format for all its effects, titles etc. (also the reason why the new “Send to FCP X” works so flawlessly), you could install FCP X i.e. Motion “.moef” et al files. The only problem being, that not nearly all the parameters controls are supported in iMovie, so many would be functionally castrated or even just not work at all. The process is also rather convoluted and I’d rather not be the one that broke your iMovie and/or project, so you might simply try googling it. 😉

October 20, 2014 at 9:03 am in reply to: Original media from HDV to FCPX to Adobe Premier? This issue is due to Apple not including the HDV component in the Windows version of QuickTime. It’s only part of the ProApps Codecs package you download after buying FCP X. So unless you or he want to e.g. purchase the Calibrated{Q} XD Decoder for PCs which allows you to read QuickTime XDCAM and HDV QuickTime video files, you’re left with having to transcode first.
Which shouldn’t actually be a big deal, seeing that pretty much any newer codec is better than HDV. 😉

That’s what we dinosaurs call “fields” or “interlace”. From back in the stone age when we worked with something called “SD” and a medium called “TV”. It’s not “a problem” it’s “Video 101”.
But if you’re seeing them in FCP X then I’d say the clip is being interpreted incorrectly.

I don’t know who the “MoGraph community” for you are, but I’m assuming they’re not using Motion as their primary MoGraph app outside of the context of FCP X, no. But the FCP X community sure would notice. As well as FCP itself, since that would bring it’s huge ecosystem in terms of plugins, templates and what not else to a near screeching halt. Hardly anything the FCP team (or the users) would want to see happen, but certainly notice, yes.
