[Alexandre Azinheira] “you should save the RMD first so you can go back to the raw file for grading.”
Well, as far as that’s concerned, it’s not in fact essential, no. REDCine merely offers more options as I said. An RMD is generated by FCP X as well if you modify anything in the RED RAW Settings panel of any given clip. In fact any and all changes you make in FCP X will carry over 100% to REDCine, Resolve et al. So you could in fact do your rough one-light in FCP to then fine-tune it in one of the other two afterwards as well. So yes, going through REDCine at any point is little more than just a personal preference, but not in any way essential.

[Andreas Kiel] “Some times people got long clips from somewhere and only portions of the clips are needed (though these portions could be unknown). Working with managed files always the whole clip would be imported and the portions have to be figured out after import.”
If by “managed files” you mean when coming from a harddisk/the Finder, then yes, you’re not able to make a selection. Coming from a card/archive you can of course even make multiple selections on a single clip to be imported individually (something I’m pretty sure no other NLE on the market offers btw).
But I suspect the logic behind that may well be that if the footage is on your/a disk locally already, it would seem redundant if you only import a section of the whole thing, since the amount of generated data (given that you can use “the leave in place” option) stays the same. Making a selection would require a copy (of just that portion) therefore generating more (basically unnecessary) data.
Nonetheless, yet another interesting app, thanks. 🙂

[Jeff Markgraf] “Not sure the REDCine step is necessary”
If you want way more options for your one-light than the rather rudimentary ones that FCP offers, then it is, yes. 😉

Before doing anything like that, you want to make sure you CONSOLIDATE the library to make sure everything is actually IN the library and not, as Noah pointed out, referenced somewhere else OUTSIDE of the library. OR you have to take those files with you also and reconnect at home. But consolidating should be the safest and by far easiest.

Actually, the easiest might be to simply use your AUDIO as your primary, since that apparently is your primary guide.
If you select everything you have in the primary now and hit ⌥⌘↑ everything will be lifted from the primary into a secondary storyline. Your primary should now have a large gap clip in it, which you could either simply leave there and continue or, for more “visual cleanliness” replace with your audio from the event. And seeing that your stills should now be in a secondary storyline you can still reap the benefits of the magnetic timeline. Only you need to have it selected if you want to e.g. use the Q, W or E keys. That way even if you move the audio the stills stay in the same relation to the audio and if you move or edit the stills the audio stays put. 🙂

To be sure, I asked Apple. And yes, there “should be no more problems with the unique ID’s as with pre-10.1 versions.” So you’re right, that part wouldn’t play into this.
But again, I personally still wouldn’t do the managing via the Finder, only through FCP itself to avoid exactly these kinds of problems. That was ultimately my only and actual point. To each his own.

[Oliver Peters] “Or even care.”
Of course. That’s a given. Not everyone needs every feature. No revelation there. But those same people will give just as much (or little) a hoot about this app, too.

[Daniel McClintock] “but I think the new 5K iMac was to be the original replacement for the old MacPro.”
IMHO: By no stretch of the imagination. There always have been and always will be certain overlaps between product lines. Hardly anything ominous to read into.

[Bill Davis] “FCP X has a whole bunch of these types of background plates already pre-built inside X.”
Yes, just not the subtle animated type as in his example. Motion has a bazillion such elements (mostly separate from actual generators) in the form of particles and replicators and such. A simple gradient is of course possible from within FCP itself, yes.

Again, I’m merely referring to the case where someone is in fact using FCP X in general, yes. And like I said, the actual archives are fully accessible on both platforms, whether FCP X is installed or not. That it’s not necessarily the most ideal one-size-fits-all on-set DIT solution is a given, yes. Just saying, since I know from experience that only extremely few X users even know the option exists or know how to use it.
