All seems to me like more of a logical fallacy then anything else. Since who wants to be monitoring what (and why) on a 27″ 5K screen? Just the desktop? Then simply get any 27″ monitor. You’ll be seeing the exact same thing. 4K video? So are you looking to watch it with a black frame around it or simply scaled? In which case neither strike me as terribly attractive compared to simply getting a “real” 4K monitor instead. Monitoring 5K material? Do I want or need to be doing that?

So yes, I guess one has to question the actual sense of Apple offering a more expensive 5K monitor as opposed to one simply buying a (possibly even better) less expensive 4K monitor, if that’s in fact what you need. And for whatever it is you are monitoring at that resolution to begin with…

Especially since the 5K iMac is in fact already giving you “native” 4K monitoring within the normal FCP interface, with enough room for events and timeline to spare. In which case the 5K actually start making some sense. Go full screen and you have the exact same thing that you would if you had a standalone. So… why do I need it or does Apple need to make one? Honest question.

But yeah, the ACTION extensions is the one I’m keeping my eye on.

“Action Extensions declare which kinds of data they can handle; they can appear in any application that deals with one or more of those data types. They can be used to view content in a new way or to edit content and then return the modified version back to the host application. An Action Extension’s interface can appear as a modal window or as a custom view directly within the host application.”

Here’s to hoping for the best and e.g. all that free space in the dashboard getting plastered full of buttons upon buttons, so we can finally feel all “pro” again when we show others our FCP interface! 😉

Using the “Reader” function of Safari takes a lot of the scare out of the 25 pages by the way. And little is actually dedicated to the actual functionality of Extensions. Very interesting to fly though either way though.

Like Jeremy said, there’s always the relative levels adjustment. Select all and CTRL-L.

But I, too, am hoping for role based master faders or the likes in future updates, yes. I’m pretty sure there’s still a lot to come in terms of audio in particular.

The rhetorical “argument” was “software that was purchased and then killed”. I don’t see where video relevant software was in any way specified. But then others have already beat me to that list anyway. With Adobe it’s also a list of various Flash (nearly as a whole), animation or web related products or even most famously apps such as Freehand? Never mind the killing or Premiere on the Mac as a whole for years after OS X came out. With Avid I can’t remember the name of whatever NLE derivative it was (DS, was it?), or the various byproducts, I just remember the (oddly low key) perturbitude when it happened way back when. Add Microsoft and others and you’ll have a lot to scroll through.

But in the end it’s irrelevant either way, since it’s tired, polemic nonsense in any case. Fact is, there is no major or even minor software company worth mentioning that hasn’t killed or “consolidated” products. Or 10. I’d say Apple is, if anything, on the lower end of that hit-list. It’s just another baseless FUD “argument” for anyone who otherwise has nothing of real substance or relevance to bring to the table imho. Btw, to say that FCP was somehow killed with the EOLing of 7, as some like to lament, is the most ridiculous claim of them all along those same lines.

Funny how you don’t hear anyone crying that PPro or Symphony etc. could somehow “easily disappear” in a year or less or that no other users were “burned many times over” considering the actual facts. So much for that “logic”.

And Apple never bought just software (Including FCP itself, as we all know), they bought technology and intellectual property i.e. code that was the software. All or much of which has been passed along into existing or subsequent products to the extent deemed useful. Be it e.g. Color tech into FCP or Shake tech into Motion etc.

Or is the next “argument” going to be that they by that same logic killed various operating systems also, seeing that OS 9 and NeXT were “killed” in favour of OS X? Hardly.
