I know that some of the DV decks like those didn’t permit direct control on output, or recording of running timecode. Back in those days we would record in the wild: that is put the deck into record and simply put the editing system into record.

Wait, you “cut” in HD, or you “cut” in SD, which is it? You make it sound like you first cut in an HD timeline and then copied all your shots to a SD timeline. And why is your SD timeline “letterbox?” HD is 16:9, and you can make a 16:9 timeline in an SD format.

1-what format did you shoot with?
2-what format did you capture with?

    Output to DV tape?

If it were me I’d post the entire thing in “HD,” whatever that means, in a ProRes codec, and then send it to Compressor to make my distribution format: DV tape, DVD, larger formats for the web, etc. That gives you the most quality, speed and control.

Render in the timeline will use only one, at least as far as I’ve ever heard. Same with compressor unless you setup Qmaster and submit your render to a cluster. This is one reason to make sure you have all matching media in your timeline, to minimize timeline rendering. you can’t avoid it altogether, but you can minimize it.

  • Take a look at the manual regarding track assignments. You just disconnect and turn off the tracks you don’t want in the patch panel.

That’s what qmaster is for. You turn it on. Turn on Quickclusters with services, assign half your cores to it. Name the cluster. Start sharing.
Then, in compressor, you submit your render to that cluster. It will use the assigned cores and you can go back to editing without interruption. If that doesn’t work on a hackintosh, well, you get what you pay for.

  • not by half. I never said you had to load them in numeric order (wink, wink).
No, it’s about getting them into the same format. There are apps out there to take the file-based pieces and rewrap them into another format without reencoding. I think the compressor route is way, way too slow, especially when I have 100 hours worth of footage and I want to load first as ProRes Proxy and later reload only my finished version. This is one big reason I’m holding off on a lot of the file-based cameras. The individual files are too restrictive to the overall workflow. There are solutions and I’m still looking.

  • our remedy is to take footage in via the Kona card in HDSDI and scale it to ProRes in real time.

  • You’re learning the lesson I learned. Get everything in a timeline to be the same format Before editing. The whole idea of multiple formats in the same timeline is a marketing sop. Sure it does it, and rather well. But it’s a time killer and most editors, including myself, are extremely time conscious in one way or another. I want to go fast. I want the system to keep up with me. I don’t want to be waiting for it.

one of the word processors lets you select the Whole block of text and do a “convert to table”
Then you delete the columns you don’t need. I just don’t remember if it was word, word perfect or pages.
