Print to tape on Sony DSR DVCAM decks
Posted by Larry Watts on April 14, 2010 at 4:31 pmWe are having difficulties printing to tape from FCP using our Sony DVCam decks: DSR-20, DSR-45, and DSR 1800A. Our Sony DSR 11 (the oldest and cheapest deck works fine). We are using Firewire.
We can get deck control and capture tapes on all but the DSR 1800A.
Does anyone have a starting place to begin figuring this out? Originally I thought it was just the remote/local control settings, but that’s not the case.
Any thoughts at all would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Larry

April 14, 2010 at 5:16 pmCritical to a number of decks is powering down the deck prior to connecting firewire. It is very easy to fry the ports on these decks.
One way to check if the deck is being seen is “about this mac” >more info> firewire
If the OS can see the deck there’s a setting issue or pref issue with FCP.
If the OS does not see the deck it’s cabling or blown ports on the device.

April 15, 2010 at 12:11 pmI know that some of the DV decks like those didn’t permit direct control on output, or recording of running timecode. Back in those days we would record in the wild: that is put the deck into record and simply put the editing system into record.
Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

April 15, 2010 at 2:52 pmWe are using a single firewire cable for everything. Each deck only has one firewire port.
I hadn’t thought about separate ports. Is this common? What is crazy is that our cheapest/oldest deck is the only one that both captures and prints.

April 15, 2010 at 2:59 pmDoug,
Thanks for the tip! Our vendor didn’t suggest that one. By the way, we are very new to FCP so everything has changed in our workflow which can be daunting when hit with it all at once.
So About this mac/ more info/ It says built in hub and below it says “unknown device”. This is my DSR 20 deck
Are there drivers to be installed? What does it take to have it recognize the device?
Thanks!

April 15, 2010 at 3:06 pmI just checked another computer with a Sony DSR 45 attached and that firewire window correctly identified the deck as a “DSR-45”, yet we haven’t successfully printed to tape with that one either.
I can’t check the DSR 11 yet as it’s attached to a PC right now. LW -

April 15, 2010 at 3:15 pmHi Larry,
With the VTR connected, look for the “Capture Preset” you are using, and, if is locked, duplicate it and open it.
Look the capture device that shows iside.

April 15, 2010 at 8:17 pmCorrection. The DSR 45 deck is recording video from FCP using the print to video tool, but the DSR 45 is not putting down TIMECODE which is why we didn’t think it was recording.
So the question now is WHY NO TIMECODE on the DSR 45, but has TC with the DSR-11?
