No problem. The J3 does do audio over SDI by the way – I know ‘cos I’ve got one! 🙂

Over here in the UK they play both PAL and NTSC – you have to go into the menu, select the standard you want then switch it off and then on again.

That’s the thing Walter. In the drop down there’s no Boris!

February 7, 2008 at 1:34 pm in reply to: HD Doc for NatGeo, advice needed

Thanks for the posts everyone. DVCPROHD sounds like the way to go assuming that there aren’t any tech issues going from one compressed HD format to another (albeit via HD-SDI). I’m sure I read somewhere that there’s a 1920×1080 setting for DVCPROHD in Final Cut, is that right? or would I just capture using an easy setup to 1280×1080 and let the Kona do all the scaling?

    Cheers
    Rob

February 7, 2008 at 9:07 am in reply to: Calibrating PPM Meters with Final Cut Pro HD

    Hi Kai,

If all you did was change the level of the tone but had previously mixing relative to the -12dB tone then your programme sound would be too hot. So you’d need to drop all the programme sound by 8dB too.

You SHOULD set your reference to -20 and mix relative to that.

PPMs have different ballistics compared to VU meters and in the UK at least are considered more reliable. Here, -18dBFS (digital) = 4PPM = -4dB (analogue). Each mark on the PPM equates to 4dB so peaking at 6PPM gives you a digital peak of -10dBFS. However because PPMs are a little slow to respond a peak of 6PPM may show higher than -10 digitally. You need to check your broadcaster’s technical requirements and how they assess the sound levels at QC.
I think that in the US you calibrate with -20 instead of -18 but the analogue remains the same, i.e. -20dBFS = 4PPM etc.

    Hope that helps

Try downloading the latest shuttle drivers – should include MC settings. Alternatively use the control panel to just set up a new set the way you like them – chances are you’ll be changing the defaults anyway

You say you’re in Italy – check your input nationality on the international tab of the system preferences. If you have a qwerty keyboard be sure that you’re set to US or British, if it’s set to Italian (not pro) then the keys are mapped differently.

November 4, 2007 at 10:26 am in reply to: Recapturing Media troubles

here’s a more detailed explanation of the problem

The problem I’ve had stemmed from a RAID unit apparently going south (despite the fact that these things are supposed to protect you from this kind of thing!!!). Anyway I had to decide whether to press on with resurrecting the drive and copying the media off it or biting the bullet and recapturing my project – it seemed that recapturing was the way to go. There’s so much media that I’ve got three machines recapturing and am dearly hoping that I’ll be able to rebuild an entire project from all this once the media’s all back on-line. I had the clips digitized on a 1 reel per bin basis (ie Bin 1 contains reel 1 only) – some of these clips are subclipped. On recapturing some of these bins (and it does seem to be ones with subclips – but I don’t know whether that’s related) FC only captures the video and I get this message :

“The clip ‘x’ was unable to be reconnected to the newly captured media, due to a mismatch in the media present in the file and the media required by the clip. Try recapturing using logged clip settings to resolve the problem.”

I have to try digitizing them again and it comes up with a warning that there are duplicate filenames and I need to rename them – this I do by adding a letter at the end of the name then pressing continue. It then digitizes the clip twice but does manage to reconnect.

Any idea what’s going on here and how I can stop it. And what on earth’s going to happen when I try to put all this lot back together!!!

While at the moment I’ve got three identical projects I’m planning to save as and give them unique names in case I have to move bins from the specific project that the media was redigitzed to. If this happens I’ve no idea what will happen to my sequences which of course look for clips from across all of these bins.

    “use clip settings” is checked

There you go, a strange one.
