Brand new out of the box computer MacPro Tower: 2×3 GHz< Dual Core Intel Xeon with 4 GB Ram. Mac OX 10.5.1. I installed FCP studio2 - brand spanking new. Updated to 6.0.2. Problem: some of the keyboard commands do not work at all, most typically cmd-z (undo), YIKES! while stangely enough others do operate correctly. I swapped out the keyboard and get the same results on a second keyboard. Trashed prefs and cmd-z worked for a while then all of a sudden no for no apparent reason. The undo command in the dropdown menu works fine. The problem only occurs with the keyboard. I then tried assigning alt-z as the undo command. It worked one time only then nothing. International keyboard settings are OK. Apple guy here is stumped. Tried fresh install of the operating system and FCP with identical results. This is getting to be harrowing. Anybody have any ideas? Is it Leopard? I haven't even had time to install third party software so there is no possibility of conflict with other programs to date. Please somebody! I have already been down 2 days due to this. Thanks!

that happened to me! Maybe a year ago…. dang, I can’t remember how I resolved it. I hesitate to say it’s a Leopard thing because I was on Tiger and it was FCP 5.

You’ve repaired permissions? Run software update for everything. What’s you Undo Levels set to? let me think some more

Is your keyboard plugged into the USB port on your CPU or into the one on your monitor???

[Kim Rowley] “I swapped out the keyboard and get the same results on a second keyboard. Trashed prefs and cmd-z worked for a while then all of a sudden no for no apparent reason.”

Then it is definitely not a problem with the keyboard. Does Command + Z work in other applications? If it does then it is most likely just a problem with FCP (thats what I am thinking it is because you said it worked for a while after trashing your preferences) If Command + Z does not work in other applications then I would say that something with ether your user preferences, or OS got jacked up.

Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

Thanks to all. I’m in Italy and it’s already night time so I’m not in front of the computer but will check Jeremy’s link first thing tomorrow though I’m pretty sure I haven’t missed any updates. But I will surely check.

I’m plugged into the CPU, not the monitor. But actually the idea of trying another USP port did cross my mind. I’m using the supplied extension USB extension cable. Could it be a power thing?

As fot the permissions, I did repair, though strangely enough it took forever. At least 10 minutes. I’m used to that being a pretty quick procedure but the progress bar seemed to hang at a certain point. I went away from the computer for a while and when I came back it had indeed repaired permissions – there was just one file out of place.

If you all get any other ideas I’d be thrilled! I’ll close the thread if and when the problem gets sorted out.

    Thanks all.

You say you’re in Italy – check your input nationality on the international tab of the system preferences. If you have a qwerty keyboard be sure that you’re set to US or British, if it’s set to Italian (not pro) then the keys are mapped differently.

A while ago there was a bug when you changed the keyboard in the keyboard input menu. The problem arises when you change while FCP is open. On my computer it prevented any “command-something” functions… not just command-Z.

Just an update incase it jogs somebody elses memory…

I followed Jeremy’s advice and saw that although I ran the Apple automatic software update option from the finder, I never got the prompt to run the 2 Apple pro updates (2007.01 and 2007.02). These updates seem to address just the kind of keyboard problems that I am experiencing. But it was too soon for elation. I downloaded both updates, but when I try to install the first one I get the message: “This computer does not need this update” !! And there is no apparent overide. The same thing happens when I try to install the second one. I have a call into Apple here though the technician of course is not in til the afternoon.

Though the problem is not solved we are hopefully honing in on the cause.

Thanks everyone, and if anything else comes to mind let me know!
