We have a project coming up where we will need to capture an extensive amount of PAL footage (but not master to PAL) and I was thinking of picking up a Sony J30SDI deck for use with our Decklink extreme.

Anyone have experience with this deck? Is it a workable situation?

    Thanks,

    It’s a dual format NTSC/PAL deck, right?

Over here in the UK they play both PAL and NTSC – you have to go into the menu, select the standard you want then switch it off and then on again.

    Hi Jason,

Just completed a doc online where the 70+ tapes were recaptured using a J3. If you’re going SDI you don’t need a J30 (but it will work fine) if the J3 is cheaper – some rental places put a premium on the 30 as it has the firewire interface too. Oh, just a thought – maybe the J3 doesn’t do audio via SDI – might be worth checking.

Deck control wasn’t a problem, though it is crude compared to the 500. For digitising it’s fine though.

One gotcha we had (this is using a multibridge pro) was digitising 16 channels of audio (14 of which were blank) because Doofus here forgot to turn the other 14 off for the first reel. Oh well.

    HTH

    Jason

Thanks for that info. Yeah I’ve had the 16 track capture experience…

They don’t seem to offer the J3 any more as a new purchase, just the j30 but I do see some used ones floating around.

    Thanks.

No problem. The J3 does do audio over SDI by the way – I know ‘cos I’ve got one! 🙂
