Thanks. I’ll check it out. (I should have known to go to Andrew. 🙂 )

In Photoshop, you’ll have to create a blank layer and merge this (blank) layer with the layer that has the styles applied to it. This will “rasterize” the layer styles and turn the effect(s) into pixels. The good news: you’ll then be able to see the effect in After Effects, no problem. The bad news: because you’ve rasterized the styles you cannot go back into Photoshop & change the settings of the layer styles.

Alternatively, you can see if you can recreate some/all of the styles in After Effects (things like drop shadow, glow and bevel & emboss will be available)… and they’ll be animatable to boot. Hope this helps!

Yeah good call on the CC Ball Action idea for the helix (though as was stated, it’s not the most realistic version possible). The tutorial from Brian Maffit that people are referring to… is it the one found on the bottom right-hand side of this website:

    https://www.totaltraining.com/bios/brianmaffitt.asp

    ??

He uses the plug-in to create a helix.. but only for about 3 seconds or so. Should be a good head-start for those who need it.

Almost certainly it was indeed a mask… an oval one with a heavy feather (set to “subtract”) on a black solid layer probably set to a layer blend mode of “Classic Color Burn” or something similar, and a very low opacity. This is a technique Andrew uses repeatedly on his DVD training (HIGHLY recommended) and in tutorials included in his product “Riot Gear” (also HIGHLY recommended) which can both be found at his website: videocopilot.net

(no I don’t work for him)

The 3d Fog effect only works with specific file types, such as .rpf and .rla among others. See this, from a previous Creative Cow forum post:

    hope this clarifies…

Andrew Kramer has a nice blur transition he sets up during this tutorial:

You can save this as a preset for use whenever you need it.

    Dave,

You mentioned “Andrew’s” technique. Do you mean Andrew Kramer? The only one I know about is Jayse Hansen:

Is there another one I’m missing?

Ditto. Total Training tapes…er… DVD’s are stellar. And Steve Holmes is superb.

You could try the effect “4-color Gradient” or “Colorama”. Those are the first two that come to mind.
